Hospice is a vital source of care for elderly people even though the details of it can often get misconstrued. Hospice is often associated with high emotion and confusion, but it can be a valuable option that families do not explore because of the misconceptions that revolve around it. It needs to be understood that hospice is about caring instead of curing, and allowing patients with limited time to live their life journey with dignity and grace. In learning the best options for handling and understanding hospice, people are able to get the best care possible for the time they have left!

On December 27th, the Residents and employees at our North Ridge Alzheimer’s Specialty Care Center in Albuquerque, NM celebrated a monumental milestone when the first COVID-19 vaccines were administered at the JEA Senior Living COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic. These first inoculations will be followed up in three weeks with the second dose to complete the series. Throughout the day, as vaccines were administered, an overwhelming wave of hope and joy-filled the clinic. These vaccines..., which are +95% effective, are the best weapon we have against this deadly virus. JEA has launched an educational campaign to help inform our residents, families, and staff on the benefits and risks associated with the vaccine. Similar vaccine clinics are being held in each of JEA’s communities with the hope of immunizing as many residents and staff as clinically appropriate.

Today there are more than 5.4 million people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and that number is constantly rising. Some tips to raise awareness for this disease include: educating family and loved one’s about the symptoms so it can be caught early, encouraging friends to wear purple, and raising money to help continue the funding for research to find a cure. By raising awareness and helping the cause, every day we become closer to finding the answer so that less people have to suffer!

On October 13th, the United States Navy observes its birthday every year. The United States Navy (USN) is the United States Armed Forces’ naval warfare service branch and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is currently the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service has over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve. With only two ships and a crew o...f eighty men, the Continental Navy was born on October 13, 1775. The decision of the Continental Congress set the Continental Navy on course to carry arms to the British army, not to defend against it. However, these two ships and crew represent the birth of the United States Navy. Throughout the Revolutionary War, their importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world’s largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia. Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not become a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed. With the advent of the airplane, the Navy became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provide the country with the sea and air defense fleets.

Alzheimer’s education is especially important for kids who have grandparents or loved ones who have been diagnosed. This disease, or other forms of memory loss can be very tough for families to deal with, and seeing a loved one deteriorate as a young child is very hard to comprehend. Some tips for helping children understand and cope with this type of situation include being honest about it, keeping an open dialogue, and allowing these children to ask questions or handle their emotions the best way they see fit. Encouraging them to do things like watch old T.V. shows, singing to favorite songs, or looking at mementos together can also help jog memories for the loved one and make it easier for the child to understand. These things will alleviate some emotions and stress for both parties.

In the United States on October 6th, National German-American Day celebrates the German heritage millions of Americans claim. This German-American heritage holiday commemorates the 13 German Mennonite families from Krefeld who landed in Philadelphia. On October 6, 1683, these families established the first German settlement in the original thirteen colonies. They named it Germantown.
