Our clinic manager Harsha Mehta participated in the breast cancer awareness fashion show last week. The judges were our long term residents in the Ewing Wing. She received second place! First place went to one of our 90 year old residents. Thank you Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield for providing prizes.

Our employee, Audrey Kee shares her story of her breast cancer journey. "My cancer story begins with finding a lump I identified from my monthly breast self-exams. I could visibly seeing the lump. I had a mammogram and the results returned negative. My primary doctor who is not from John C. Fremont Hospital did not make any referrals for me following the negative mammogram report. I was concerned that I had a lump and I needed more answers. After two weeks of persistent ca...lls to the provider, I was told to make a self-referral for a breast surgeon. I started looking in the phone book for a breast surgeon. I located a surgeon and called to make an appointment. After the surgeon looked at my mammogram results and examined me, I was told that my tumor would never have shown up on a mammogram or a breast ultrasound. The only way to determine the mass and its size would be a breast MRI. You see my tumor lay right next the nipple. A punch biopsy was done at the time of my first visit. And three days later, I knew I had an invasive cancer probably a stage 2 or 3. A breast MRI was done. The mass was noted to be about 1x2 cm or approximately x1 inch. Surgery for a lumpectomy with reconstruction was done. This was followed by fifteen high rad radiation treatments. Then followed a five year sentence of hormone blocker therapy as the tumor was an estrogen based tumor. Please do not give up on your monthly self breast checks. Do not give up if you find a lump and the mammogram report returns negative. Question your provider and ask for answers."
