Happy Birthday to Us! Spring of 2019 marks the 25th year of JazzAmerica - 25 years of providing Tuition-Free jazz instruction to Los Angeles-area youth. We're still on our mission: to perpetuate the jazz tradition. We're reaching out to you, our loyal supporters, as we try to raise $3,625 to help prepare for our culminating performance of this Silver Anniversary year: a set of jazz from the JazzAmerica Big Band at the prestigious Central Avenue Jazz Festival, on Sunday, ...July 28. When we began in 1994, we hosted more than 90 high school students for Saturday "WorkChops"; concurrently, we partnered with the LACER nonprofit to provide afterschool jazz instruction at four middle schools and a high school That early success derived mostly from the vision, commitment and charisma of our co-founder, Buddy Collette. He had always been a leader - from the neighborhood jazz combos he formed at age 13, to breaking the color barrier on national television, to leading the fight to black and white musicians unions. As you read this, we will have had the first of our seven weekly rehearsals of the new 2019 JazzAmerica Big Band. As befits our mission, we'll teach the charts of Basie and Ellington - two bands that performed along Central Avenue - in the very neighborhood where Buddy Collette and his Stars of Jazz group helped stamp Central Avenue as the West Coast Jazz See more
