The 1932 hot rod is out. Mobile advertising. I hope the town is ready for us to roll.
Tomorrow is the BIG DAY! Let’s get out and vote so we can finish strong. Thanks so much!
Former Congresswoman Lynn Schenk, the first woman to represent San Diego in the U.S. House of Representatives, has endorsed me for San Diego City Council, District 1. Lynn Schenk was inducted into the San Diego County Women's Hall of Fame in 2012 by the Women's Museum of California, Commission on the Status of Women, University of California San Diego Women's Center and San Diego State University Women's Studies. Schenk's background in environmental protection won her seats on the Energy and Commerce committees and the Merchant Marine and Fisheries committees. She also understands the importance of creating more jobs in San Diego. I'm proud to have her support.
Do you live in University City? If so, you know there are many safety, environmental and quality-of-life issues affecting you. There's additional noise from the F-35 flying out of MCAS Miramar; the sewage line on Genesee; the landfill odor; the new development in/around Gullstrand; increased traffic on Genesee; major construction for the new trolley; the proposed traffic signal at Governor and Lakewood; a possible "compromise" Regents Road bridge; and just a general concern... for additional means of entering and exiting. If elected, I will consider all logical and feasible options if they maintain your safety and quality of life. University City has a mix of political views. My career as an attorney and public servant has been spent balancing competing interests. If we focus on shared interests, we can make progress. If we focus on rigid positions, we get defensive and stall. I will focus on the overlapping and shared interests in UC, many of which are being addressed by the Community Plan Update committee. It's time for balance. It's time for practical solutions. I'd be honored to be your voice.
It was great to support @lajollayouthbaseball yesterday at La Jolla Country Club. Fantastic fundraising event. I played as a kid, and now my 8-year-old son is playing. I’m proud to support this organization.
Disturbing but true: Human trafficking has a huge presence in San Diego. It's the second-largest underground economy, and is worth more than $810 million. There are thousands of victims. Each trafficker generates about $670,000 through forced coercion. The average age is 16, and most victims are young girls. I worked on the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report as a public servant at the U.S. Department of State. I'm the only San Diego City Council District 1 candidate w...ith this knowledge and expertise. We must work to eliminate this scourge, which comes in the form of sex trafficking and forced labor in the agricultural and fishing industries. It also exists as domestic servitude. We all know that short-term vacation rentals get a lot of attention by all the candidates (rightly so). But do you know that human trafficking is also happening in these short-term vacation rentals? This should never be tolerated. If elected to San Diego City Council, I will continue to bring awareness to this hideous form of slavery. One must know about something in order to care about it. Let's raise more awareness of human trafficking in San Diego. Let's train more people to spot it. Join me. Dear University City residents: Isn't it time to connect the north and south sides of the community? Yes, I mean the Regents Road bridge. But not any old bridge. A compromise bridge. It could be a beautiful bridge accessible only to emergency vehicles responding to a call. A mechanical arm would prevent other cars from accessing it, thus mitigating any concerns about increased traffic. Also, there would be space along the side for pedestrians and cyclists. This is pri...marily a safety issue. In the absence of a bridge, response times for 911 calls increase, which, I think we can all agree, is frightening -- especially if you're the one waiting. We're also seeing more fires in and around San Diego, so having a bridge would increase our defenses. Environmental concerns would, of course, be addressed. The bridge and the environment are *not* mutually exclusive. We can (and should) accommodate both. If we focus on shared interests rather than rigid partisan positions, we can benefit the WHOLE community while protecting the open space we all cherish. Shared interests. Not special interests. It's time to bridge our differences.
