Yesterday, Proposition 47 passed in California. And with that, November 4, 2014 marked a historical day for our state’s criminal justice system. Those who are convicted of less serious theft and drug offenses that involve less than $950 will now face misdemeanors instead of felonies and a maximum jail time of up to only one year, as opposed to the prior three year maximum. It is also important to note that even individuals who currently face or are serving jail sentences under the old rules can now petition the court for a new Prop 47 sentence, to reduce their felonies to misdemeanor, and even in certain cases get released from custody.
