The essence of releasing identification with the personality is questioning experiences of suffering each time they arise by asking: Is this experience of pain really me? Is it necessary? Or is it a reflection of conditioned beliefs?... Our initial tendency is to blame painful experiences on other people and our surroundings. Through witnessing and questioning our vrttis, we gradually come to see that the root cause of suffering lies in identification with limiting beliefs that lead to suffering. An important aspect of releasing conditioning is looking back into our past to see how we repeat the same patterns in different situations but always with the same theme and thereby reinforce limiting beliefs. This examination of our tendencies throughout our life journey gradually leads to clarity in regard to the core beliefs that cause suffering. This clarity leads to the formation of aklista vrttis, new ways of seeing ourselves and life that reduce identification with the vrttis. Ultimately, we come to see that all of our beliefs and conditioning are distinct from purua, our inner being, which is completely autonomous and free from all vrttis. - by Joseph Le Page (Yoga Sutras in Practice) We wish you all the best for the new year 2021! Stay healthy and happy, with a lot of study and Yoga! Namaste!

Kapota Mudra - Gesture of the Dove For Cultivating Non-Violence - Ahimsa Affirmation: Practicing non-violence at all levels of being, I experience complete inner peace.... Ahimsa, which means "non-violence," is the foundation of the fi ve Yamas, the universal ethical values. The practice of Ahimsa encompasses all levels of our being, beginning with our own bodies by adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle, along with adequate rest and stress management. As we embrace our own bodies with greater care and kindness, we naturally expand Ahimsa to include our thoughts and feelings by welcoming them without judging ourselves so harshly. As we practice non-violence toward our bodies and minds, we experience a greater sense of wholeness and inner peace, reducing the need to control and compete, thereby supporting us in practicing non-violence toward other beings. As we expand our vow of Ahimsa to all beings, we recognize our essential unity with all of creation, allowing peacefulness to infuse all of our interactions and activities.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras - 1.33 The Four Immeasurable Qualities maitr karu mudito-pek-sukha-dukha puya-apuya-viay bhvanta citta-prasdanam The mind becomes clear and serene through the cultivation of maitri (loving kindness), karuna (compassion), mudita (intrinsic joy) and upeksha (equanimity) in relation to pleasure and pain, good and evil. ... Sutra 1.33 continues the presentation of the citta parkarmas, methods and techniques to overcome the antaryas and their symptoms. Overcoming these impediments ultimately serves to support the practice of samdhi. A large portion of the Yoga Sutras focusses on stilling the vrttis internally at the level of the mind with a special focus on the practice of samdhi. This sutra provides an essential complement by presenting how to work with the mind during the interactions of daily living in that the antaryas are formed through these interactions. It is only when we integrate the transformation that occurs through meditation into daily living that they have genuine value and meaning. Confusion and negativity along with subsequent suffering that arise in daily living can be softened through asana, pranayama, yoga nidra, meditation and other techniques, but ultimately, the internal and external conflict that are the source of the antarayas and their symptoms need to be seen and released. The methodology suggested by Patanjali is the practice of the four qualities presented in this sutra, maitr, loving kindness; karu, compassion; mudita, intrinsic joy and upek, equanimity. - Yoga Sutras in Practice, by Joseph Le Page (upcoming book!)

Within this universe of mudras, our particular focus is the use of the gestures as energetic keys for awakening Core Qualities, leading to a vision of unity. Our journey within the mudra tradition began in the early 1990s through studies with Richard Miller, PhD. Richard organized the mudras into families and we have expanded his concept to include the whole of Yoga philosophy and psychology. Numerous other teachers have inspired our spiritual path, including Kali Ray, Vayua...nanda, Eneida de Oliveira, Glória Arieira and all the faculty at Kripalu Center. Over the years, we have developed a unique experiential framework for mudra practice within the model of the five koshas - the five dimensions of our being. We have shared this model with thousands of students in our Integrative Yoga Therapy training programs (www.iytyogatherapy.com). We have also used the gestures extensively in therapeutic settings at the Enchanted Mountain Center in Brazil (www.enchanted-mountain.org). Most importantly, mudras have been an essential vehicle within our own journey of health, healing and awakening. It is this personal experience that forms the foundation and essence of this book. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means wheel. These wheels are centers of energy or vital force (Prana) within the body. They receive energy from the universe, store it, and distribute it to specific parts of the body / mind through a network of subtle psychic channels called nadis. There are seven large chakras, but there are also several small energy centers in the body. The chakras are part of the energy body, Pranamaya Kosha, but their activity extends to all aspects of our... existence. At the most basic level, all energies within the Universe, and within the body, which is a microcosm of the universe, are manifestations of the Source Energy. These energies, however, vibrate at different frequency levels to perform specific tasks. The chakras represent these different frequencies of energy. Each of these energy frequencies has its own zone within the body and its specific function within the chakra system. All of these energy levels or frequencies are still united as aspects of Source Energy, even when they maintain their individual characteristic. Each of the chakra energies also has a specific theme or main intention. These include fundamental human archetypes, such as survival, love and spiritual transformation. These themes are organized along an evolutionary hierarchy of human needs, starting with basic behaviors for survival and evolving towards spiritual transformation. - by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim Do you know our Chakra Card Posters? "The Core Qualities, which are called bhava or bhavana in Sanskrit, are presented for each posture in the Toolbox. They are inherent positive qualities of each pose, reflections of our deeper spiritual essence, which is already present as a potential, waiting to be awakened. Specific asanas awaken specific qualities so that the practice of Yoga as a whole becomes a vehicle for unfolding the inherent positive qualities of our true being. By highlighting the Core Qualities awak...ened by each pose, you can use the asanas as keys for unlocking these inherent positive qualities of your own being. For example, the Core Quality or bhavana of Tadasana, is stability. As we practice this pose, using the directions designed to awaken this quality, we cultivate stability of both mind and body. This Core Quality is awakened and supported by the affirmation that accompanies each posture. The affirmation for Tadasana is I stand in the Mountain’s stability as a reflection of my true being.

Medha Prana Kriya Mudra - Gesture of Mental Vigor For Welcoming Thoughts and Feelings After establishing a firm foundation for meditation by stabilizing the body and breath, the next step is cultivating an attitude of non-resistance to all that arises in the mind. ... During meditation, positive, challenging and neutral thoughts and emotions arise. Our tendency is to embrace the positive and reject, suppress or react to difficult thoughts and feelings. The more we resist, the more thoughts and feelings insist upon gaining our attention. An effective way of dealing with thoughts and feelings, especially those that are challenging, is to welcome them, allowing them to arise and pass away freely in synchrony with our rhythmic breathing, thereby deepening our ability to continue our meditation no matter what is happening in the mind or in our surroundings. - from Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim

"As we deepen our awareness of our own habits and tendencies through conscious witnessing, we see that our efforts to achieve, succeed, control and keep in order to be happy usually wind up creating limitation and suffering. We also see that even when we satisfy our perceived needs, the drive to get and keep is actually increased, feeding a cycle of dissatisfaction followed by even more striving that results in a downward spiral of negativity. By questioning our attachments..., we gradually release this tendency toward limitation and suffering. Non-attachment is also a natural reflection of a growing recognition of our true being, inherently whole and complete and therefore needing nothing within prakrti in order to experience happiness and peace because they are our very nature, our svarpa. Through this growing recognition of our true being, we also see that all of our desires, wants and perceived needs within prakrti are actually reflections of a deeper quest to recognize our inner being as our life’s true purpose and destiny."" - from Yoga Sutras in Practice - Joseph's Le Page upcoming book

Yoga comes from a Sanskrit word yuj, meaning to link or join together. The root word is related to our English word yoke, as in the joining of two oxen to pull a cart. When we discuss what exactly is being linked together, it takes us immediately to the very heart of yoga. Yoga makes a distinction between our everyday self, the self that includes our physical body and our personality, and a larger or cosmic Self, the entire web of creation of which we are a small strand, a d...rop in the infinite ocean of life. This larger Self is usually distinguished from the smaller self by the capital S at the beginning of the word. The individual self is sometimes referred to as Jiva, while the cosmic Self is called Brahman. Yoga brings these two together as a single unity. When fully identified and integrated with the cosmic Self, the individual self is called Atman. From the perspective of Brahman, all of life is one unity with no separation anywhere. The function of all the various techniques of yoga is to bring us into connection with and help us remember and become increasingly aware of a unity that is already always present. - Integrative Yoga Teacher Training Manual

Chakras are a road map for our life journey as we evolve from basic needs to more subtle and spiritual aspirations. At each step of our journey, the chakras describe an area of our lives for exploration, integration and transformation. In this way, chakras are like a school of life where we complete and integrate one area of learning and move on to the next. Each chakra forms the base of the chakra just above, and the central developmental themes of each chakra need to ...be fulfilled in order to fully realize the intentions of the following chakras. Although the chakras are a hierarchy, this does not mean that the journey is linear. In reality, we are always working with all chakras throughout our lives. Even spiritual adepts who spend long periods in meditation face issues related to fear, insecurity, intimacy and personal power. Like everything else in Yoga, chakras are tools to increase awareness of what exists rather than a means of overcoming or transcending the "less spiritual" aspects of ourselves. Becoming aware of the various facets of our existence does not automatically remove them, but it does give us the freedom to start choosing how we will respond and react to our core standards. - Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim Do you know our Chakra Card Posters? Hridaya Mudra - Gesture of the Spiritual Heart - For Seeking Divine Refuge Hridaya means "heart," and Hridaya mudra cultivates a space of inner refuge in which we can turn to the Divine for support and solace. This gesture directs breath, awareness and energy into the heart center, cultivating a sense of trust and safety, allowing us to acknowledge our feelings and explore all the dimensions of the challenging situation we are facing. This gesture helps to calm the heart and ...release stress-related tension from the chest. Hridaya mudra also instills a greater sense of confidence in meeting challenges, which reduces the effects of stress and supports the health of the immune system. The lengthening of the inhaling breath, cultivated by this gesture, provides the energy needed to meet challenges more effectively. The exhalation is also lengthened, instilling a sense of relaxation and release that supports us in dealing with challenges more calmly and objectively. - from Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim

The sixth chakra, Ajna, which means "center of command," is located at the third eye, between the eyebrows. The main theme of this energy center is developing a vision of unity beyond all questions, doubts and dualities at the level of the personality. This vision of unity allows us to discern clearly between our limitless true Self and the limited personality. ... The process of moving beyond the play of opposites is represented by the lotus of the sixth chakra, with its two violet petals that are often placed on either side of an all-seeing eye of wisdom. Before the awakening of the third eye, we tend to see all of life as a play of opposites: success and failure, loss and gain that naturally create tension and conflict. As we move beyond duality through awakening wisdom and clarity, we come to see life's ups and downs as a process of exploration and learning that ultimately leads to a vision of unity. - from the book Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim Do you know our Chakra Meditation Cards? The chakras are energetic centers that receive, store, transform and channel vital energy. There are seven principal chakras located along the subtle axis within the spinal column, beginning at the perineum and culminating at the crown of the head. Each of the energetic centers is represented by a lotus with a specific color and number of petals. The center of each lotus holds a symbol associated with one of the five elements, as well as a bija mantra, or "seed sound," that ...awakens each chakra's essential qualities. Each of the chakras is also associated with a particular area of our body and a specific gland of the endocrine system. To the extent that the energy centers are balanced, these glands and body areas are nourished energetically. One of the ways to determine whether a particular chakra is balanced is to sense the free flow of energy within its respective body area. This can be done by visualizing the petals of a particular chakra opening with each inhalation and resting toward their center with each exhalation. To the extent that this movement is experienced as smooth and fluid, it is an indicator that the chakra is balanced. - from Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim

The natural tendency of Vata is to focus on air and space qualities - spiritual, mystical, light movement and flowing poses. Vata is naturally drawn to energy experiences and exploration of the chakras. These are appropriate for the Vata constitution, but since vata is light and mobile, it goes easily out of balance. When Vata is out of balance, a more grounded, stable and consistent practice is recommended. The natural tendency of Pitta is to focus on heating and energizing ...postures, such as rapid sun salutes. Pitta is precise and perfection-oriented, and also highly competitive. Pitta can become attached to the outcome of the practice as opposed to experiencing the benefits in the moment. When Pitta is imbalanced, a more calming and restorative practice is indicated. The natural tendency of Kapha with its focus on earth and grounding, along with the moistness of water, is a practice which is consistent, solid, strengthening, grounded and determined. Kapha can become lethargic or stuck in a particular mode of practicing. When Kapha is imbalanced, a practice that builds more heat and energy as well as introducing spiritual, intuitive and creative themes, is helpful. The teaching of Yoga allows us to open a door for the evolution and integration of the person as a whole. This process of integration does not add anything, but rather the discovery of the truest and most profound part of ourselves that already exists and is present in us. Therefore, as teachers, we must refer to all aspects of the human being as a person to facilitate this transformation process that is Yoga. So this means that each Yoga class must have a theme or a spiritua...l message or a transformation message? All Yoga Practices eventually lead to the discovery of the spiritual essence. To facilitate this discovery, the Yoga teacher must open the correct door in appropriate time according to the students' needs. The student holds the key for their own spiritual essence waiting to be discovered, nurtured and fully fulfilled. The Yoga teacher can create a fertile soil for this process and show the student how to cultivate, water it and nourish it. Unified standards at the highest professional level create a foundation for upholding yoga therapy’s unique vision of healing. The essence of this vision is that all of the methods and techniques of yoga are vehicles for spiritual freedom. This is evidenced by the fact that the traditional texts of yoga offer no partial solutions to the question of suffering, nor are there texts that focus exclusively on physical health, relaxation, or stress management. All of yoga’s method...s and techniques are seen as vehicles for the journey to freedom. The importance of not mistaking the vehicle for the destination is highlighted in the texts of Hatha Yoga, the very ones that focus on asana and pranayama. These texts stress that Hatha Yoga is to be used only as a preparation for Raja Yoga. The essence of yoga therapy is therefore exploring the relationship between freedom and health and healing. This exploration of freedom as the essence and meaning of the life journey opens us to see all of yoga’s benefits as expressions of freedom. #pathtofreedom #yogatherapy #spiritualfreedom #iytpublishing #integrativeyoga #integrativehealing

"All of the karma is comprised of actions whether these be of thought, word or deed. These actions are based on conditioning called samskaras. The samskaras tend to make us act in a certain way and as we act we deepen those samskaras or habit patterns. These samskaras form deeper patterns of belief, the minds tendencies, called vasanas. These core beliefs shape the way we see the world and propel us to continue the same apttern of samskaras which in turn strengthen the tendencies to act in a certain way". - excerpt from Joseph Le Page's new book (forthcoming), The Yoga Sutras in Practice #yogasutrasofpatanjali #yogasutras #iytpublishing #pastlives

The root chakra, Muladhara, which means "base of support," is located at the perineum. It is symbolized by a lotus with four red petals arranged around an ochre-colored square, representing stability and the four cardinal directions. The main theme of the first chakra is security. When the first chakra is balanced, we sense ourselves fully supported at all moments along our life journey. When this sense of support is not complete, we may experience fear and insecurity as well... as a feeling that our basic survival needs are not provided for adequately. To balance the first chakra, we cultivate the qualities of grounding, embodiment, connection to the natural world and an enhanced sense of abundance. As we embody these qualities, we are able to perceive our needs for safety and security more objectively, allowing us to recognize that the nature of life is to support us abundantly. With a greater sense of support and trust, we begin to see that security is a natural reflection of our true being, thereby creating a fi rm foundation for our spiritual journey. - from Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim

Meditation is often thought of as a state we attain through a practice of a technique, normally seated in a meditation posture. This perspective gives an impression of meditation as an achievement or something we add on to our lives that was not previously present. A clearer understanding can be gained by taking the opposite approach: meditation is an experience that is always present, waiting to be uncovered or discovered. From this perspective, meditation is the nature of l...ife, and the essence of what we call reality. Meditation, rather than taking us away from mundane reality, is actually developing complete objectivity in which we come to see ourselves and the world exactly as they are. This objectivity involves removing all of the conditioning and colored filters of belief that stand between us and seeing life as it is. This process can be called the practice of meditation, and the experience of living in the world free from conditioning and all of its accompanying emotional pain, sorrow, fear, and anger can be called the experience of meditation itself. Since our conditioning includes the sum total of our experiences at a cultural, social, and family level, the deconditioning process is extensive and normally requires a multifaceted approach. For this reason, there are numerous techniques and methods of meditation. Our conditioning offers us the gift of an individual self, a rare opportunity to experience this world of duality and develop the knowledge, wisdom, and insight to see beyond the appearances and to look directly at the source from which these appearances spring. This source can be viewed as the background of life, the energy and intelligence behind all of the laws of nature, including those that govern human behavior and the functioning of the mind. - from Integrative Yoga Teacher Training Manual

Vaikhara Mudra - Gesture of the Protective Shield For Protection from the Forces of Nature Vaikhara means "solid and protective," like a coat of armor. Vaikhara mudra instills a sense of an energetic shield that protects us in the face of all... challenges, especially those presented by natural phenomena. This gesture directs breath, awareness and energy into the chest, especially into the upper sternum where the thymus gland is located, supporting the health of the immune system. Vaikhara mudra lengthens the inhaling breath, enhancing alertness and providing the energy needed for dealing with emergencies quickly and efficiently. As Vaikhara mudra enhances alertness, we become more aware of our surroundings, including the forces of nature in the form of the five elements. This gesture supports us in aligning with the protective qualities of each of the five elements. As we become more sensitive to the elements that are the matrix of all of creation, including our own bodies, we are able to discern more easily which environments are safe and which may be harmful. - from Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim (available at iytyogatherapy.com/products)

History and context of Integrative Yoga Yoga for the health of the whole person Integrative Yoga began in the early 1990’s as a training program in Yoga and mind-body health. The mind body health movement was gaining acceptance through an understanding of the ways that both positive and negative mind states affect both health and healing. Of course, this is something that Yoga had understood for millennia. The Yoga Vasistha from the 5th century presents this simply and clear...ly: good health comes from good thoughts and illness is the effect of negative thinking. So, although mind-body health is not new, scientific research into the effects of attitudes and lifestyle on health is relatively new. Integrative Yoga Therapy, founded by Joseph Le Page in 1993, was the first training program to explore the interface of Yoga and mind-body health and healing. The first Integrative Yoga Therapy training in Brazil was held in 1996. The students in this program were mostly Yoga teachers who wanted to understand the mind body dimension and include it in their work both with therapeutic groups and in one-on-one Yoga Therapy sessions. What we discovered was that the Yoga teachers entering our Integrative Yoga Therapy Training Program lacked many areas of knowledge in Yoga theory and practice that provide a foundation for more advanced studies. Some lacked a technical understanding of the Yoga postures; others lacked an understanding of the spiritual context of the Yoga practice and many lacked teaching and communication skills. Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim created the Integrative Yoga Teacher Training Program to meet the need for a fully prepared teacher of Yoga for the health of the whole person. This comprehensive Yoga Teacher Training program has been offered at Enchanted Mountain Center in Garopaba, Santa Catarina since 2003. Read full article by Joseph Le Page at iytyogatherapy.com

Mandala Mudra - Gesture of the Circle For Attaining Spiritual Union - Samadhi At a symbolic level, the circular shape of Mandala mudra represents the unity of all creation, instilling a sense of our oneness with the entire web of life. As this sense of oneness becomes more complete, any remaining sense of separation is released, allowing us to experience all of life as a circle of unity. As we deepen our sense of oneness, Sahasrara chakra, at the crown of the head, opens natu...rally, allowing us to glimpse our essential nature as freedom and unity. - Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim

The Kleshas describe the process of illness that occurs when we’re not in a yogic state. The Kleshas can be understood within the context of Yoga Therapy as the following: Avidya lack of understanding of our true nature. Avidya, or ignorance of the truth of unity, is the source of all forms of illness. Ignorance refers here to a lack of understanding that all of life is interconnected and that each one of us is an integral part of the web of life. Avidya is the inability ...to perceive the larger dimension in relation to oneself, one’s relationships and the world as a whole. Asmita egoism, a natural consequence of avidya, a way of thinking and acting in which the individual is the center of the world and the world revolves around him/her. Raga Desire, wanting to achieve, obtain, secure, attach. Dvesha Aversion, displeasure, anger, the act of avoiding all that represents a threat. Attachment and aversion are a natural consequence of the individual ego that resides in separation, which on the one hand, results in competition and attachment and on the other, fear and anxiety. Abinivesha Fear of death, underlying existential anxiety. Abinivesha is sometimes defined as fear of death. In a larger sense, it’s the existential anxiety that accompanies life without a clear sense of meaning and purpose. Abinivesha is the feeling of falling into a trap, of being on a narrow cliff and falling between life and death, with disaster looming. - Poster available at iytyogatherapy.com/products

Mudras are gestures of the hands, face and body that promote physical health, psychological balance and spiritual awakening. The Sanskrit word mudra, with the emphasis on the final "a," can be translated as "gesture," "seal," "attitude" or "signature." Mudras are gestures that evoke psychological and spiritual attitudes, each with its own specific quality or "signature." The word mudra is derived from two root words: mud, which means "delight," "pleasure" or "enchantment," a...nd rati, which means "to bring forth." Mudras bring forth our own inherent delight and enchantment, which are always present and waiting to be awakened. The use of mudras is most strongly identified with Indian spiritual traditions where they have been used for more than two thousand years. However, mudras are also found in various religious traditions around the world, including Christianity, where Christ is often depicted using hand gestures. Some mudras are almost universal, and one of the most easily recognized is the prayer position in which the hands are placed together in front of the heart as a symbol of reverence and devotion. Within the Indian spiritual tradition, this gesture is called Anjali mudra. - Mudras for Healing and Transformation, by Joseph Le Page and Lilian Aboim

Tada drastuh svarupe ’vasthanam - Then, (when the vrttis have come into stillness), the seer abides in its own form (essential nature). Yoga is stilling the vrttis, the movements of the mind that arise from the conditioned personality, and as this conditioning is released, we recognize our svarpa, our inner being, whose very nature is stillness and peace. This inner being is not the product of Yoga technics, but simply winnowing the chaff of our conditioning to revea...l the our true being, already, always whole and complete, simply waiting to be seen. In order to recognize our authentic being, we develop the ability to witness all the layers of conditioning, observing the vrttis as they arise while neither repressing, expressing or identifying with them as reality. Pushan is the "solar deity of sustenance and prosperity." Pushan mudra directs breath, awareness and energy to the solar plexus and abdomen, creating a massaging effect that increases circulation to the digestive system. This gesture further optimizes digestion by deepening our awareness of the process of digestion, allowing us to perceive the first signs of imbalance before they evolve into more serious digestive conditions. This heightened sensitivity also makes us more co...nscious of how and what we eat, and the subsequent effects on our body. Pushan mudra enhances agni, the subtle digestive fi re, which is essential for optimal digestion, nutrition and elimination. Balanced agni also improves the subtle digestion of life experiences, which further helps to reduce stress, thereby improving physical digestion. Ayurveda is the ancient healing science of India. Literally, Ayurveda means the science of life. The roots of Ayurveda go back several thousand years, making it one of the oldest and most extensively used of all the ancient healing arts. Ayurveda is both a preventive medicine and a means of healing disease. Ayurveda looks at the whole person, including the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects that are key factors in health and illness. Like yoga, Ayurveda holds that... illness begins at subtle levels and gradually becomes more apparent until it manifests as what we call disease. This understanding of health is closely related to the model of the five koshas. From this perspective, dis-ease originates at the most subtle koshas and, if not detected, will gain momentum and eventually appear in the physical body. On the other hand, harmony in the subtle bodies at the levels of the spirit, mind, and emotion will be reflected as a state of balance in all the physical systems of the body. This balance will be experienced as vitality, energy, and radiant health. Because the mind and body are completely interconnected, physical health is also experienced as a sense of connectedness, love, happiness, and relaxation. Moreover, balance at the physical, psychological, and interpersonal levels ultimately arises out of a sense of spiritual oneness and a knowing of ourselves as spiritual beings. The model of the Koshas from the Taittiriya Upanishad is a map of the human being that serves as a guide for the spiritual journey. Kosha can be translated as "sheath" or "layer," and refers to the multiple dimensions of our being, our five "bodies:" physical, energetic, psycho-emotional, wisdom and bliss. A less frequently used but equally important translation of the word kosha is "treasure," referring to all of the dimensions of our being as treasures waiting to be reveal...ed. Each of the names of the koshas is followed by the word maya, which, in this context, means "consisting of." 1. Annamaya Kosha - Physical Body Anna means "food," and the Annamaya kosha consists of our physical body, the material dimension of our being that is sustained by food. 2. Pranamaya Kosha - Energy Body Prana means "vital energy," and the Pranamaya kosha encompasses our subtle anatomy, including chakras, prana vayus and nadis. 3. Manomaya Kosha - Psycho-Emotional Body Manas means "mind," and the Manomaya kosha encompasses our thoughts, feelings and emotions that make up our personality. 4. Vijnanamaya Kosha - Wisdom Body Vijnana means "higher wisdom," and the Vijnanamaya kosha is the dimension of our being that allows for discernment and spiritual transformation. 5. Anandamaya Kosha - Bliss Body Ananda means "bliss," and the Anandamaya kosha encompasses all of our inherent positive qualities as natural reflections of our spiritual essence. Kaleshvara Mudra - Gesture of the Lord of Time For Attaining Spiritual Freedom - Moksha Moksha, "spiritual liberation," is the culmination of the spiritual journey as the moment to moment experience of freedom and unity. Spiritual liberation requires both wisdom and compassion. Wisdom is absolute clarity in regard to the nature of our true being, free from the limitations of our conditioning.... This recognition is experienced as a homecoming, an absolute knowing that we are already whole and complete. Wisdom must be balanced with compassion, which is the recognition of our oneness with all beings, allowing us to see that we all share a single journey toward unity. When wisdom and compassion unite, we are able to live in the freedom of our true being while embracing all of life wholeheartedly. The integration of wisdom and compassion allows us to celebrate each moment of life as an unfolding journey of freedom and unity. atha yognusanam Therefore, (when the student is prepared), instruction in Yoga (begins). At the most basic level, this sutra states that Yoga is the subject matter of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and also signifies an intention that the study of Yoga be auspicious and beneficial. As Sutra 1.1 is explored more deeply, a number of meanings unfolds. ... The first word of this sutra, atha, meaning now is often paired with the last word of the Yoga Sutras, iti, meaning conclusion. Together, the words atha and iti convey: "thus it has been taught, signifying that the Yoga Sutras is a compilation of teachings from pre-existing spiritual traditions and not an original work by Patanjali. The word atha, can also be translated as therefore, suggesting that some preliminary process has occurred that prepares the student for the practice of Yoga. This preparation involves the recognition that our habitual ways of doing and being, in which we seek happiness in our surroundings, can never provide the peace and contentment we seek. Through this understanding, we choose a completely new direction, which involves releasing attachment to the limited personality and recognizing ourselves as purua, our true inner being. . . . . .
