Stop #1: You wouldn’t know it just by looking at it, or even just by the incredible smell of baked goods that stops you in your steps as you’re walking by, but this building at 5622 Martin Luther King Jr Way in West Oakland is home to the first official meeting place during the early formation of the Black Panther Party. Opened in 1967, this place was always busy and bustling. This branch was managed by one of the BPP ...leaders and best friend to Huey Newton, David Hilliard. Since then, the space has transformed into what is now It’s All Good Bakery. The owner is Kim Cloud who grew up in Oakland, and actually participated in the Panthers’ Free Breakfast Program as a child. You’ll notice when you walk in the memorabilia of the BPP on the walls, put up as a tribute to honor what the Panthers did for the community in Oakland. If you’re ever in the area, pop in! The employees are incredibly kind and their food is mouthwatering. I’m salivating right now just thinking about their yellow cake with chocolate frosting (my fucking favorite).
