During these unprecedented times, our Island Pacific frontliners inspire us with their work ethic, tenacity and values to serve the community, no matter how challenging these times are today! A team is made up of different people doing different parts. The success of the team is defined on not just how the individual contributes but well the individual works in unison with other team members. This is why the team at Island Pacific Supermarket in the California city of Fresno ...has been able to keep their doors open and serve the community, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. For this edition of Bagong Bayani Profiles, we learn of Jane Bagay and Edcel Lituania. These two young Filipinos can be found working various roles around the supermarket. And once the shelter-in-place began, they knew their jobs were going to be different and more crucial. During the pandemic mostly everything was shut down, said Bagay. Yes, we had an option to stay home but how can they feed their families? They needed us more than ever. Meanwhile, Lituania admits he had no idea what the shutdown would mean. First, I thought the store would be slow but no, it was crazy because everyone was panic buying, he said. So we stayed busy. And like all Island Pacific Supermarkets adjustments were made to ensure public safety. We installed the sneeze guards, said Lituania. We wear masks and gloves. We provide alcohol wipes and hand sanitizers for customers and employees, as well. This is the only Island Pacific Supermarket located in the heart of Central California. It is three hours southeast from the San Francisco Bay Area and over three and a half hours north from Los Angeles. Regardless, this location has been an essential part to not just the Filipino community but to all the communities living out of Fresno. We come to work knowing our obligations and tasks but we don’t limit ourselves when it comes to helping each other, Bagay said. We want to celebrate Jane and Edcel and acknowledge them and countless others at Island Pacific that make it their mission to be able to serve YOU and ALL your families during this pandemic.
