Dear Star Sailors We hope you are all well and healthy. It is hard to believe that it is now nine months since the 2020 Bacardi Cup, which for many of us marked our final sailing event before covid-19 disrupted all our lives. The 93rd Bacardi Cup was another special occasion, bringing together friends and rivals from around the world of Star Class sailing for challenging racing and the ever memorable Bacardi cocktails and après-parties. ... We’ve all missed being on the water so much and we are hopeful that in three months’ time we will be able to enjoy the fun all over again and run the 94th edition of the Bacardi Cup, 7-13 March 2021 albeit in a refined ‘covid-19 safe’ format. I imagine many anticipated this pandemic would have passed already, but it seems it will be around for some time yet and with the situation evolving daily it is impossible to predict the situation come March 2021. Here in Miami, the Organizing Authority is holding regular discussions on how to organize the 94th Bacardi Cup to keep everyone safe and there are many scenarios and options that we are working through to modify the event. Adjustments will have to be made to the usual Bacardi Cup event format and we will all need to work together to embrace the covid-19 protocols we put in place. Over the coming months we will keep monitoring the situation and will regularly inform you (directly to past competitors and via ISCRYA) on how we plan to adjust and refine the event format. The safety of our sailors and event team as well as the community is our highest priority and we will do everything possible to deliver a safe event for all. Opening race of the 2020 Bacardi Cup featured Diego Negri / Frithjof Kleen (ITA 8533) and Mateusz Kusznierewicz / Bruno Prada (POL8545) battling for Star Cla...ss supremacy. The Italians were racing on Virgila with Kusznierewicz / Prada on Savannah, named after the 1996 Olympic venue where Kusznierewicz first made history by winning his Olympic gold medal in the @InternationalFinnClass and the first ever Olympic sailing medal for Poland And of course the amazing duo of Kusznierewicz / Prada are the reigning Bacardi Cup Champions. Remembering Dierk Thomsen....... The Star Class and Kiel fleet are sad to inform the Star Class of the loss of Dierk Thomsen. Life member, Commodore (2014-2017) and President (1984-86 & 1996-97), Harry Nye Award winner......the Star Class mourns the loss of Dierk Thomsen. Awarded the Harry Nye Memorial Trophy in 1999 for his outstanding devotion to the Class, Dierk dedicated his life to the Class and worked very hard to help regain its Olympic Class status. "The Star Cl...ass owes Dierk enormously for his guidance, leadership and dedication. We would not be where we are today--- an Olympic Class with both a rich history and bright future...it it wasn't for our friend Dierk Thomsen" from his award presentation. Dierk was committed to the international sailing for the past 5 decades and an important member of the Kiel Starboat fleet. As a former Star boat sailor, he made significant contributions to their concerns and organized in 2009 the European Championship in Kiel and 2017 in Glucksburg. His latest contribution was to bring the World Championship in 2021 to Kiel. We send our condolences to his family. In deepest sorry, Dierk, we will miss you! See more
