Total Body Irradiation is a new cancer treatment technique to save children It's been years that stem cell transplantation has been one of the treatment methods for children with cancer and has had a significant role in saving the lives of our heroes. In the past year, a new cancer treatment technique was launched at MAHAK Hospital for the first time in Iran which resulted in increasing the survival rate in children with high-risk leukemia. Do you like to know more about Tota...l Body Irradiation (TBI)? TBI delivers radiation to the whole body from head to toe. It cleans the body from malignant cells and prevents rejection by suppressing patient’s immune system; just like a land which is ready to grow crops. At the moment, MAHAK has been able to introduce this advanced technique to the Iranian medical community for the first time in order to integrate cancer treatment with international standards. This technique has been utilized at MAHAK Hospital since the past year and informing the public about this issue has been postponed until being assured about its clinical results. During this period other treatment centers in Iran started to use this method after MAHAK. TBI is a very time-consuming technique which takes 4 hours each session. In addition to being time-consuming, TBI requires close interdisciplinary cooperation between a radiation oncologist, a medical physicist, two radiation therapists and a radiographer (for simultaneous imaging during the treatment with a portable device). In addition, since this sort of treatment is unfamiliar, challenging and presenting risks to children, the presence of psychologists and social workers to support children and their families is of very i during the irradiation process. When a child is diagnosed with cancer- so is their family and everyone that loves them. The 10 Most Common Types of Childhood Cancers 1-Leukemia (acute lymphoblastic & acute myeloid) 2-CNS, brain and spinal cord tumors 3-Lymphomas (including Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin) 4-Skin cancer and melanomas 5-Soft tissue tumors (including rhabdomyosarcoma) 6-Germ cell tumors 7-Neuroblastoma 8-Bone cancers (including osteosarcoma & Ewing sarcoma) 9-Renal cancer (including Wilms tumor) 10-Retinoblastoma In the United States, among children, from birth to age 19, more than 18,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed each year. Many parents have to travel hours to hospitals to get treatment for their children. They often times have to stay there for more than a month.
