World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. Each year, organizations and individuals worldwide bring attention to the HIV epidemic, endeavor to increase HIV awareness and knowledge, speak out against HIV stigma, and call for an increased response to move toward Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America. This year, the Inland Empire HIV Planning Council sponsored a virtual section of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The AIDS Memorial Quilt comprises quilt panels created to tell the s...tory of loved ones lost to AIDS visually. Visit the virtual AIDS Memorial Quilt to view the Inland Empire HIV Planning Council's panel section and learn more about the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Inland Empire HIV Planning Council Newsletter October 2020 - https://mailchi.mp//inland-empire-hiv-planning-council-new
Today the HIV/AIDS community lost a world-class activist in the battle against HIV. Timothy Ray Brown, previously known as the "Berlin Patient" was the first person in the world to be cured of HIV. First diagnosed with HIV in 1995 and subsequently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2007, he underwent multiple stem cell transplants which put his AML into remission and cured his HIV with the CCR5 Delta 32 deletions. As a health educator, I gave many presentations about HI...V at schools. I would always bring up the "Berlin Patient" because I loved to explain the process of how doctors eradicated the virus from his body using the CCR5 Delta 32 mutation. You can imagine how excited I was when he and his partner moved out to Palm Springs while I was working at Desert AIDS Project. He became a friend and was the most humble person you could ever meet. Today's news was heartbreaking. Not only was Timothy Ray Brown an ambassador of hope, that a cure is possible, he was also my hero. - Rafael Gonzalez, Inland Empire HIV Planning Council Support Staff See more
