Wednesday musing; Inspiration comes from many places. People have brought in tshirts, boxes, matchbooks, cancelled checks, stationary, stickers, books, records, photos, drawings, jewelry, objects d'art , handprints, footprints, lipprints..... Oh all manner of things. Now they pull it up on their phone. Less mess left behind; 'cause I got a drawer full of that stuff.

Wednesday musing: One day this lady marches her new husband in like a hostage. Memory tells me she actually pulled him in by his sleeve. She does all the talkin' . " He wants my name on his arm! " she barks in a tone that suggests this is punishment for some transgression on his part. And this guy looks cowed . Downcast eyes, hang- dog expression, shame. Either shame for his iniquities or that he is no match for his bossy bride. I get the stencil made up and get him in the ch...air . Once I get the stencil on, the lady retires to the curb to have a cigarette. Finally the hostage speaks. He says in an almost inaudible voice out of the side of his mouth, " I don't want to do this ". " so don't " I tell him. " I can't do that ", he replies. I tell him that instead of regular black ink we can do it in a color like red, blue or purple. That way, if need be, he can cover it up with another tattoo at a later time. The weenie likes the idea so much, he has to go outside and run it by her. Stupido. By this time I could be halfway done while she's still outside. So he goes outside and I can see him explaining what he wants to do and then I hear her exclaim "Nooooooo, no! You're getting it in a black! " And she pulls him back into the shop and tosses him into the chair whereupon I proceed to permanently emblazon her moniker on his deflated flesh. I've always wondered how they made out and what the upshot of a solid 'no' would have been. I guess I could have refused to do it as a matter of ehics but I didn't want to tangle with her either and 50 bucks is 50 bucks. See more

Wednesday musing: This one's from a looooong time ago. I was here late. Those were the days when you had to make your own needles and it was a time-consuming, dirty mess. I always did that after hours because before we opened, the burned liquid flux from all that soldering was too smelly. Then you had to neutralize the acid from the flux in baking soda, clean the needle manually and then run it through an ultrasonic cleaner before it is packaged and sterilized. In the early 9...0s we used a small sterilizer we called 'the hot dog oven' . While I'm waiting the 45 minutes for the cycle to run, this well-dressed (for Antioch) somewhat rumpled man swagger's drunkenly into the shop long after midnight and wants to " procure himself a tattoo " . Now, when somebody's this gassed I'll half-heartedly try to dissuade them from doing it. But this guy's got Panache. This guy's got a very engaging line of bullshit delivered with an off-hand style. Gotta be a salesman and whatever it is, I'd buy one. He wants a classic little heart and ribbon with some flowers. I don't recall the name but it was his daughter's name. He says "Life's Too Short not to do the things you enjoy. Why do we work? So we can afford to do the things that we enjoy. And it's especially nice if you enjoy your work. I enjoy my work. And I enjoyed getting fucked up ". That last part made me remember the whole thing Then the guy dozes off for the rest of the tattoo. It's not so big so I decide to go the extra mile on it while he's snoozing. I know from my experiences as a bartender that he's not going to remember very much about his encounter when he wakes up and discovers he has a tattoo. I wanted it to be a doozy. See more
