UCLA research continues pushing forward! EEB graduate student Shawn Schwartz has remained focused on his project to improve neural network training for biological research. Initially inspired by his study of fishes' color patterns, his current research seeks to help all researchers across the field. Schwartz, along with his fellow researchers in the Alfaro Lab, are developing a website that biologists can use to create custom data training sets for deep learning models. The ...research was recognized as a Top 4 poster at IDRE's Early Career Research Day in November 2019. Read the full article on IDRE's website!

At the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, IDRE responded quickly to the transition to virtual learning. Read about the response, and the ongoing research amidst the pandemic in our April 2020 newsletter! Last month, we highlighted Early Career Research Day Winner Evan Maltz’s research, Decoding NF-kB Dynamics Using a High-Throughput, Information-Based Approach. The UCLA Ph.D. student uses deep learning to quantify dependency between cell states and functions. Read more about Evan's research in the newsletter and on IDRE's website: https://bit.ly/2YJyHAa
