One of our favorite exercises to help gain shoulder strength and size is the overhead press. Here are different versions of the overhead press. Take a look at them and see which one fits into your specific set of goals! - 1. Narrow grip overhead press. This variation is the most fundamental and balanced version of the overhead press. It has equal parts shoulder stabilizer and primary mover activation. Choose this version or the dumbbell overhead press if you are just sta...rting out with this movement. - 2. Wide Grip overhead press. This variation is a bit more challenging. The wide grip reinforces activation in your scapular and thoracic spine stabilizers. If you find yourself having a hard time with this one, work on your shoulder stability first before attempting it again. - 3. Dumbbell overhead press. This variation is similar to the narrow grip overhead press in that it is very basic and fundamental. However this version has the added advantage of free range of motion. This allows for a more natural pressing motion that accommodates to your body proportions. This is also a better variation for those with wrist problems as it allows you to adopt a neutral wrist position throughout the press. - 4. Single Arm upside down Kettlebell press. This variation is good for those who want to really challenge their overhead scapular stability.
