The fact that [the delta] is broken necessitates change. And the methodology can be a vehicle for that change. -Steve Deverel, Principal Hydrologist at HydroFocus. For more, please see the Ecosystem Marketplace article about the Carbon Methodology at http://www.ecosystemmarketplace.com/artic/california-delta/... HydroFocus led the effort to develop the methodology for proponents to benefit financially in the carbon market by converting to wetlands and rice. Restoration activities that rebuild subsided lands are critical to long-term ecosystem sustainability, are important to reducing the risk of levy failure and sea level rise, and are a significant source of GHG emissions reductions. said Steve Deverel, President of HydroFocus. The HydroFocus Team received the American Carbon Registry Innovation award last night (April 19)! ACR honored the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy as the lead agency, HydroFocus as the lead author and both U.C. Berkeley and Tierra Resources for technical support for the development of the methodology for the Restoration of California Deltaic and Coastal Wetlands. http://mailchi.mp//acr-presents-annual-awards-to-celebrate

The HydroFocus team recently completed initial measurements using Sedimentation Erosion Tables (SET’s) in newly created wetlands on Sherman Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The SET allows for a highly precise measurement of elevation changes in wetlands over time. Collecting these measurements repeatedly will give us a rate of elevation change which will help quantify subsidence reversal and carbon sequestration in these wetlands. HydroFocus is working with Department of Water Resources and UC Berkeley on this project funded through the Department of Fish and Wildlife and cap and trade auction revenue.

With so much water funneling into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, understanding the levee systems is critical. Check out this article in which the HydroFocus team dove into this topic. A big congratulations to the HydroFocus Team for completing a major review and update of the North Marina Groundwater Model! Our team used the model to simulate various slant well pumping effects on groundwater elevations in the Monterey Area. Our modeling results were used in the Draft EIR to determine possible impacts to groundwater. Check out the press release below - our report is included as Appendix E2. http://www.publicnow.com//D59CB97DBDBC8069F3910925798527A5
