POSTER FRIDAY! TRANSATLANTIC TUNNEL (1935) - This stone lithograph one-sheet was made for the British science fiction/disaster movie directed by Maurice Elvey, and headlined by American movie star, Richard Dix. Based on a 1913 German novel, Der Tunnel, it tells the story of a group of scientists and engineers who join forces to build a tunnel from Great Britain to the US beneath the Atlantic Ocean. The film was produced at a time when the threat of war loomed over Europe, and... perhaps intentionally, it emphasized the cooperation between the two English speaking countries. The screenplay somewhat idealizes the conviction that such a tunnel could safeguard the peace of the world, even though certain characters in the film are financiers who are also part of an international arms alliance, and they believe the tunnel might actually stimulate a potential war. At one point, the financiers depress the stock market enough that they are almost able to take ownership of the tunnel. Mr. Dix plays the hard-charging engineer who spends 20 years bringing this great endeavor to realization. Over the course of the movie the tunnel takes on a life of its own as it devours men, money, accidents, relationships and exerts a powerful hypnosis over everyone who comes into contact with it. In the film's fictional time-line, an English Channel tunnel was built in 1940. The real opening of the Chunnel wasn't until 1994. Also, another plot point involves an active volcanic area that the tunnel builders run into halfway across the Atlantic. This volcano almost ends the tunnel completion takes the lives of hundreds of workers. In reality, a volcanic ridge on the ocean floor was known about at the time, but its level of activity and magma seepage wasn't confirmed until the mid-1950's. These are just two examples of how far ahead of its time Transatlantic Tunnel actually was. #hydroflex #posterfriday #underwatercinamtography #cinematography #underwater

RePost - #TipsNTricks - Small things can make a big difference. We needed to shoot our talent swimming in a creek. The concern was that the 7 people in the water (me, AC, talent) would trash the water quality. So, the day before, we installed black tarps on the bottom and secured it. This way, we stepped on plastic and didn’t churn up as much muck/silt as much.... You can see on the right what was churned up on the sides. Had we not done this, our water clarity would have been destroyed. - thanks to @keetzer - shout out to @sliverthegreyhound FX coord. for making it possible!!! - Hillbilly Elegy Dir: Ron Howard DP: Maryse Alberti Set Photographer @ltstillpix A Op: @mcguire_themancunian SOC B Op: @lappin07 SOC - water team - Underwater DP: @iantakahashi 1st AC: @fullframedigital 2nd AC: @erik_j_olson WaterTech: @marc_casey_aquaboogie #underwatwrcinematography #scuba #water #hydroflex #alexaMini @nauticamhousings @hydroflexinc #creek @society_of_camera_operators #wetwork #waterwork
