Do you know what the green arrow is pointing to? These have commonly been referred to as "Widow Makers" but what are they? What does this have to do with spiders? Read on to find out....... Actually, these have nothing to do with spiders! This term is used to describe a broken or dead tree branch that is hanging or ready to fall. In this picture one can see the aftermath of these dangerous falling branches. These kinds of branches can be found on all types of trees, but coni...fers (like the redwood) are among the most likely contenders to drop a limb on an unsuspecting passerby! OH No!! The term "Widow Maker" came to be simply because it was widely known that if you were unlucky to get hit by these falling limbs then your spouse would become a "widow". . . . PSA: As the seasons change and the weather in our parks becomes more windy and stormy, our staff advises all redwood park visitors to be aware of this phenomenon and be cautious when hiking in the redwoods, particularly old growth redwood trails and especially on windy days! #redwoods #NCRD #californiaparks #hiking #trail #NativeLand #sinkyone

Have you ever looked at a Redwood and seen bunches of these little green shoots springing up from the base? These little shoots are actually clones of the original large tree that are springing up from the roots or burls! Redwoods are some of the most resilient trees ,and can really exemplify the idea of "life after death". In this photo we can actually see a bunch of new clonal shoots arising from this redwood stump along the Woodland Loop trail. Even after this tree was cut down to the base, it will continue to live on through the clones it sends up. Truly amazing!

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day from Humboldt Redwoods State Park which is in Native Lolangkok territory! Today especially, we would would like to celebrate indigenous peoples all over the world as they continue to be on the forefront of social and environmental stewardship. Since time of immemorial they pruned, planted, and burned the land for generations, in turn this harmonious relationship benefited both people and the land. We have them to thank for the land management techniques that allowed for the persistence of the beautiful natural spaces we have left today. Today we HONOR YOU !

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a safe haven for a lot of different kinds of wildlife, including some endangered species. We have some of the best biologists who are working to boost and/or maintain the population of these species. Can you name at least one endangered species that lives in Humboldt Redwoods State Park?

Please drive extra carefully in the parks near the wildfires. Many animals are fleeing the flames and are in unfamiliar territory. For current information of the fires, visit https://www.fire.ca.gov/
