The Human Vase

Fantastic experience working with the Gabby Wild Foundation in Sumatra. Helping spread awareness of the critically endangered Sumatran elephant through art. Gabby Wild is a wildlife conservationist who runs a US-based charity for the protection of endangered animals by doing work both on the ground and with sustainable fashion. Make up artist Jennifer Aspinall and floral designer Alison Franchi had the opportunity to work with Gabby in Sumatra where Gabby and others are sa...ving critically endangered animals including the Sunda clouded leopard, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran elephant, Sumatran rhino, Sumatran orangutan, and Sumatran subspecies of sunbear. To save them they have been rebuilding the rainforest that has been torched by poachers trying to smoke out the animals and stopping virgin rainforest (only 8% is left of it, by the way) from being illegally chopped down for palm oil plantations. They have a team of 24/7 eco-guards that live out in the rainforest and also video monitor for animals and poachers at night. During the day they replant the forest with baby trees from our nursery. They have camera traps to conduct population studies, since they don’t even know how many of these animals are actually left. The elephants are being poached for their tusks to make bracelets and trinkets, the rhinos are being poached for their horns to cure diseases (and no, it doesn’t cure anything because it’s just really an overgrown fingernail), sunbears for their gallbladders (Chinese medicine practice), Sumatran tigers for their skin and medicinal properties, and Sunda clouded leopards for their gorgeous fur.
