The more you study humans, the more you see that we’re machines, Rath told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2001. The more you study machines, the more you see that they evolve and are undergoing this trend of greater complexity, which seems to mimic an organic evolution to a state which eventually has to be sentient.

Charles White (American, 1918-1979) Love Letter I, 1971 color lithograph on paper sheet and image: 30 x 22 3/8 in. (76.2 x 56.7 cm)... Smithsonian American Art Museum, Heritage Gallery, Los Angeles, Gift of June Wayne . White made the work in response to the arrest of Angela Davis. The image was featured on the cover of a card created by The National United Committee to Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners requesting her release. (The mailer is illustrated in Now Dig This!, page 140.) Part of a letter-writing campaign, the card was sent to supporters with the following message: * Dear Governor Reagan: Because we love Justice and Freedom; Because we truly believe that she is being denied the presumption of innocence and equal protection under the law, as guaranteed by the Constitution of these United States; Because we are alarmed by the effect this pre-trial, punitive imprisonment is having on her health and well-being, We ask you, as Governor, to intercede for the release of Angela Davis on reasonable bail culturetype.com . #CharlesWhite

Charles White (American, 1918-1979) Mississippi, 1972 oil wash on board... 59 13/16 x 47 1/4 in. (152 x 120 cm) . An inverted compass is positioned around the central figure in Mississippi, a visual pun on the symbolism and significance of the north in African American history. Before the Civil War, the north was equated with freedom from slavery, and in later years it was associated with economic prosperity as many southern blacks migrated north for the promise of employment and social freedoms. The story is personal for White, as his mother moved from Mississippi to Chicago in 1914. The inversion of the poles symbolizes the significance of Mississippi for the artist and the centrality of the South for the civil rights movement. Events like Freedom Summer, a campaign to register African American voters in Mississippi, were crucial to the progress of the movement. lovingly lifted from hammer.ucla.edu . #CharlesWhite See more

materialism (with narcissistic addictions to money, fame and spectacle) and racism (against black and indigenous people, Muslims, Jews and non-white immigrants) have laid bare the organised hatred, greed and corruption in the country.

The killing machine of the US military here and abroad has lost its authority. The profit-driven capitalist economy has lost its glow. And the glitz of the market-driven culture (including media and education) are more and more hollow. Dr. Cornel West . h/t @francesca_gabbiani / @guardian
