Cathedral: A Poem by James Hubbell Awakening as if from a dream I turn to the news I hear the cracking,... the rumbling of a cathedral falling the footing forgotten the stones laid carelessly. Then, I remember the hidden moon, the breathing in and out of nature And, I know that the earth awaits a new cathedral. And, I know that I must find my stone, place it carefully for Life waits, too. In order to ensure a better future for our children and our planet, each of us has to do our part in reducing our carbon footprint. Hubbell and Hubbell Architects projects have been working towards lower energy emissions and a lower carbon footprint since we were founded 25 years ago, but there is much more to do. Drew Hubbell’s love of basketball and longing for March Madness drew him to read an article in The Delacorte Review, The Baller, it inspired our studio to dig our... feet in ( https://delacortereview.org/2020/04/01/the-baller/ ) to see what more we can do to address this critical issue. So the question is: How can architecture and sustainable design contribute to lowering our carbon footprint? Roughly 40% of U.S. emissions come from the heating, cooling, and ventilating of buildings, and even more in cities like New York. In comparison, transportation emissions contribute 25%. So we, as architects and designers, have the ability to lower the emission rate and contribute to a healthier society. Ed Mazria, the founder of Architecture 2030, an organization created to reduce the energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the built environment and to develop more sustainable and resilient carbon-neutral structures, said, If architects don’t attack this, then the world doesn’t have a chance. At Hubbell & Hubbell, we pride ourselves in taking strides in the field of resilient designs, including natural and alternative building materials such as straw bale construction and ICF blocks. We are working towards lowering the operational energy of building designs and love to work with clients who also have that goal. Our team visited the San Diego Zoo Safari Park last week and really enjoyed seeing how the Australian Exhibit turned out! We have done quite a bit of work with the park and have loved it - from the elephant enclosures to the new giraffe enclosure to the Watering Hole restaurant & bar to the Australia Exhibit, which includes the platypus (rare and amazing!) enclosure, kangaroos within feet of visitors meandering along the trails, and the Wool Shed, the perfect place to get a b...ite to eat. In the last image, you'll see both the giraffe enclosure on the left and the Watering Hole on the right, overlooking a beautiful expansive area with rhinos, giraffes, antelopes, and so much more. . . . Interview with Drew Hubbell about his work on Deer Park Monastery! Drew Hubbell was interviewed about the materials and the design of the Nuns' Residence in a beautifully captivated video featuring the benefits of straw bale building within a community. At Hubbell and Hubbell, we constantly work to improve our green building methods, and our work with straw bale structures is rewarding for both us and our clients. Benefits include energy savings, fire-resistance, inexpensive... and renewable materials, reduced pollution, reduced pressure on forests, and reduced health hazards. Hubbell & Hubbell has designed and permitted over 40 straw bale structures in San Diego County and is currently working on the first one to ever be permitted in LA County. The Caretaker's Cottage, a small home designed by James Hubbell and Hubbell & Hubbell Architects, is currently being built on Hubbell Hill in Santa Ysabel, CA with James as the leader and construction manager Joel Masters working with the team. It is a great example of alternative materials that were also used on the Ilan-Lael Center next door, 3 structures finished within the last couple years. Insulated concrete block (ICF) is used for the walls while Tridipanels are used f...or the roof and vaults. These materials not only enable a creative and versatile design, they have incredible insulating qualities that have proven itself in energy savings and comfort levels as well as sound quality. The first two images are the Caretaker's cottage during construction, the third is James' sketch. Stay posted for more images as the cottage progresses! ICF is composed of cement, admixtures & water, and post-industrial / consumer Styrofoam. This mixture of materials creates a fire-resistant structure, the blocks themselves proving to not even burn at an open flame (4,000 degrees!), a very valuable quality especially in Southern California. Not only that, but 100% of the Styrofoam in the ICF has been recycled while 9/10ths of each block of ICF is recycled Styrofoam. Similar to CMU block, the ICF cores are grouted with concrete and rebar & creates load-bearing, shear, retaining, perimeter, sound attenuation, and highly insulated stem walls. The overall cost has proven to be less than wood framing in most projects and it is considered to be 7 times stronger than wood or metal stud frame construction, capable of withstanding up to 250mph. Tridipanels can be used for floors, ceilings, and roofs and share similar qualities to ICF blocks, withstanding winds at 200mph. They are pre-fabricated recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) panels framed by welded wire space frame and are field-applied with cement (Shotcrete) after panels are put in place. For more information on Hubbell & Hubbell's use of these materials, visit our site here: https://www.hubbellandhubbell.com/green-building-design/ . . . . . We are proud to see that the Kubicek straw bale home Hubbell & Hubbell designed in 2018 was featured in Valley News last month! This 2,200SF home in Temecula houses 3 residents comfortably and with immense savings to their electric bill due to straw bale's great insulation qualities. To put it into perspective, the average monthly electric cost in San Diego County is $95-130 while these residents' bill is around $80/month for a 2,200SF green structure. Not only that, but stra...w bale construction is fire-resistant, which is definitely a factor to consider if you are living in a wildfire-hazardous area. The residents worked with 41 volunteers who helped them stack bales and construct their home. A good ol' fashioned "barn (bale) raising!" We are thrilled to see that they are loving their new home.
