Back in 1974, the Soviet Union, with its Arab allies, rammed a resolution " Zionism is Racism" on the United Nations, and the writer, Cynthia Ozick mourned," All the World Wants the Jews Dead". 47years later, the Soviet Union is dead, the UN rescinded the resolution, and Arab nations have been making their peace with Israel and the Jewish people are not dead. On this Yom Hashoah, as we honor the memory of the martyrs of our people, we recall that for many of us, the horror was not an event of the receding past . We recall those of our close family that were lost to us before we could even know them. I have posted my grandmother, Helena Iger Gottdenker, shot in the sand hills outside Lwow, and my uncle, Karol Gottdenker, discovered by the Nazis in the last days of the war in Buczacz, and summarily executed. May their memories be for a blessing.
