#HSVCSuccessStory Kiara has grown up to be one cute pup! This adorable 5-month-old girl was adopted from the shelter in late June of this year. She was a mystery dog, as no one could figure out what breed she was. While her owners, Esther and Sandra, still aren't sure what her breed is, they do know they now can't imagine life without her! Since welcoming her into the family, Sandra says Kiara has really grown in both size and personality. "She is a lover of squeaky toys, pla...ying with water, car rides, and naps. She has endless energy and is fearless when it comes to exploring, discovering, and playing!" said Sandra. Like most of us, Sandra and Esther have been spending more time at home due to the ongoing pandemic. According to Sandra, Kiara has been an endless source of entertainment and joy during these uncertain times. "She has been the greatest gift during this pandemic. We are so grateful for her," said Sandra. Thank you to Sandra and Esther for giving Kiara the loving home she deserves! #HSVC #WeAreHSVC #humanesociety #animalshelter

Beaux and Arrow sure know how to tug on your heartstrings, just look at those faces! This adorable sister duo was brought to the shelter at less than a week old after being abandoned by their mother. Adoption Counselor/Foster Coordinator Josephine Maxson fostered the 2-month-old babies until they were old enough to be adopted. Both Beaux (left) and Arrow (right) are sweet, cuddly, and playful kittens. Gentle Beaux wants nothing more than to sit on your lap and snuggle, whil...e adventurous Arrow just wants to explore her surroundings. These two are very much a bonded pair and are looking to find a forever home together. If you think you could be a good fit for this sweet pair of sisters, please visit our website at hsvc.org/adopt and click the orange "Let's Get Started" button, and fill out an adoption appointment request to meet them! #HSVC #WeAreHSVC #humanesociety

On Thursday, October 22nd, Santa Barbara County Animal Services officials investigated a call from a concerned citizen regarding a potential case of dog hoarding. Upon arrival, the officials were met with over 100 Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixed dogs inside the Lompoc home. The owner soon decided it was in the animals’ best interest to be surrendered over to officials to find new homes. An 18-member team was assembled to transport the 104 dogs to the Santa Maria Animal Shelter... in a safe and humane manner. The team included a veterinarian, two vet techs, four animal control officers, three supervisory staff, five support staff, and three volunteers. Members of the team worked until after midnight to ensure all of the dogs were safe, comfortable, and well cared for at their shelter. Animal Services quickly coordinated with local shelters and rescue partners, including the Humane Society of Ventura County, to find placement for each of the 104 dogs. On Friday, October 23rd, Humane Officer King and Media and Marketing Coordinator Amy King drove to the Santa Maria Animal Shelter to rescue 21 of the small dogs and transport them back to the shelter in Ojai. We were more than happy to help in any way that we could. Our staff has been great in making the 21 dogs now in our care feel safe, comfortable, and cared for, said Shelter Director Jolene Hoffman. Each dog was evaluated and given a bath upon arriving at the HSVC. With the help of our staff, the small pups are slowly adjusting to their new surroundings and getting more comfortable each day. If you are interested in adopting one of our rescue pups, please visit our website at hsvc.org/adopt to stay up-to-date on when they will be available for adoption.

Max sure loves to be pet, just look at that smile! Three-year-old Max brings joy to everyone he meets. Our staff affectionately refer to him as the "gentle giant" due to his large size and incredibly sweet personality. A handsome Anatolian Shepherd mix, Max was originally adopted from the HSVC as a 7-month-old puppy in 2017. He was recently returned to the shelter after his previous owner could no longer care for him. He is a very mellow dog for his size and age and he wants nothing more than to be your best friend. Oh, and belly scratches. He LOVES belly scratches! If you think you could be a good fit for Max, please visit our website at hsvc.org/adopt and click the orange "Let's Get Started" button to fill out an adoption appointment request form to meet him!

#HSVCupdate One-year-old Angus was brought to the HSVC as a stray in early August. A handsome black Lab/Retriever mix, Angus loved playing with toys and running around in our agility yard. After noticing Angus’ high toy drive, a staff member contacted our friends at National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) located in Santa Paula to see if he might be a good fit for their program. SDF is a national organization that recruits and trains rescue dogs and then partners them w...ith firefighters and first responders. We were thrilled to welcome Sylvia Stoney, SDF’s Director of Canine Recruitment, to the shelter in Ojai for a meet and greet with Angus. Sylvia spent time with Angus in our agility yard and performed a quick assessment to see if he had some of the qualities SDF looks for in their trainees. She accessed Angus' toy drive, nerve strength, and agility. After passing the first round of assessments, Sylvia took Angus to the SDF campus to test his skills further. The SDF staff conducted a full performance evaluation on Angus to see if he had what it takes to be a search dog. The evaluation consisted of several tests including a hunting test both on the ground and on a rubble pile as well as a temperament test to see how Angus reacted to meeting new people and other dogs. While Angus passed the initial tests, it seemed he was more interested in making new friends at SDF than passing his other evaluations. Though he was not meant to be a search dog, Angus will still find his perfect forever home through SDF’s Lifetime Care Program. He has been working with SDF trainers to strengthen his obedience, good citizen, and social skills. Angus has the potential to be an awesome family pet and adventure buddy. Anyone interested in making Angus a part of their family can learn more about him by visiting SDF’s website at searchdogfoundation.org/. We are so proud of how far our handsome boy has come and look forward to seeing him continue to grow in his forever home!
