Dear Environmental Resources Engineering Students, As we start the Spring 2021 semester today, one day after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we are writing to acknowledge the moment we find ourselves in together. We are horrified by the take-over of the United States Capitol on January 6th, and the violent mob’s efforts to overturn a democratic election. It is disgraceful that many elected officials encouraged and enabled this insurrection, and continue undermining voting rights.... We are also reminded that these events white supremacists using violence to attempt to break a multi-racial democracy, and elected officials’ attempts to nullify the voting rights of people of color are not unique in our nation’s history. We affirm our belief in democracy, in the importance of our words and our actions, and in the right of every citizen to vote (and for those votes to be counted). We abhor what the violent mob stands for: white supremacy and authoritarianism. We are hopeful for a powerful rebuke of these actions, from elected officials and the broader community, and hopeful for a more just, more informed, and more inclusive democracy.
