Going scuba diving in the 1940s was nothing like scuba diving today. You can go get certified and be diving in no time if you want, but in the '40s you not only had to be a good swimmer but you had to know how to work some pretty cumbersome equipment. For instance, these pieces of scuba equipment look like they're going to either turn you into a buoy or make you sink straight to the bottom of the ocean. Scuba gear wouldn't really be revolutionized until Jacque Cousteau worked with compressed gas engineer Emile Gagnan to create the Aqua-Lung, a creation that set the precedent for scuba gear today.

Opening Day for the 2020/2021 Lobster Season in California is just around the corner!!! We wanted to take this time to share some helpful tips, and reflect upo...n some local history. This year the California Spiny Lobster Season begins at 6 a.m. Saturday October 3, 2020 - according to the CDFW "California Ocean Sportfishing Regulations" handbook. These handy guides are available at many retail outfitters, and also online...so pick one up to make sure you don't have a gaffe that can cost you plenty. Remember: All divers hunting must be in possession of a valid California Sportfishing License, as well as a California Spiny Lobster Report Card. If diving - those items must be within 500 yards of your entry point. The Spiny Lobster Report Card must be pre-filled out with the month, day, location and gear code - prior to beginning your hunt. Limit is seven (7) per licensed participant Minimum Size is 3 1/4 inches (from rear edge of eye socket to rear edge of the body shell...aka carapace) - you must be in possession of a lobster gauge! All lobster must be measured while in the water - and any shorts released immediately in the water. Historically lobster season rang out across the state at midnight...and thousands of divers across the state slipped in to the cold, dark waters of the Pacific in search of those tasty critters. Over the decades there amassed a considerable number of diver incidents, accidents and deaths that coincided with this opening - and from that begun the 3R's Program. The Rocks, Reefs and Rips program was begun in 1974 under the direction and genius of Al Bruton - then a supervising ocean lifeguard for the City of San Diego. This program was specifically designed to teach dive instructors the importance of integrating in to their courses - site specific education in their dive courses, which focused on the unique features of the rocky reef dive sites along the San Diego coastline. As it turns out...those tasty lobsters prefer a specific habitat - usually rocky structures, in relatively shallow waters. Unfortunately (for the new and inexperienced divers, or veteran complacent divers) the season in which we can hunt also coincides with the time of year we encounter large powerful swells. Large surf usually results in large subsurface surge, and powerful rip-currents. Those powerful rip-currents are frequently associated with submerged rock structures (preferred habitat)...put all of that together with the typical preferred hunting time (night) and you have a recipe for chaos. The San Diego Council of Divers continues to promote, fund and teach the original 3R's course. In fact, this author instructed in his first 3R's as an ocean lifeguard under the direction of then Lt. Brandt Bass. The 3R's program is free to the general public and in non-covid years we typically offer eight (8) site specific trainings a summer. Come join us for one of these. Pro Tips: Make sure you have successfully completed a dive during the day at any site you are planning on hunting for lobsters by night fall. If you are unfamiliar with a dive site - hire a guide; join a dive club; network with divers who are experienced and trustworthy. Ensure your primary dive light has fresh battery's or charge; bring a fully charged backup light; mount a signal light/chem-light on your tank. Plan your lobster dive (depth, pressures, time, emergency recall, signaling, emergency procedure, rescue protocol) before your dive and ensure your dive buddy is on the same page. In the event of any emergency - DROP YOUR WEIGHTS!!!!!!!!! (dont forget to exhale if you are under water). I guarantee you - the cost to replace any weights you lost will be insignificant compared to your emergency room bill, or funeral costs. Have fun! Be safe! Share your bounty with those you love :)

Spotted Eagle rays has an unusual tactic to tracking down their prey, swimming along the bottom and using its large nose to sense crabs, claims, snails and othe...r tasty snacks that are hiding in the sand. They do occasionally also eat shrimp octopus , marine worms and small bony fish Encounter like this is pretty common while diving at the Galapagos Islands Thumbs up if you like the video, don’t forget to follow us please See more

WOW! A beachgoer in Costa Rica captured an amazing sight: hundreds of sea turtles making their way onshore to lay their eggs. Olive ridley sea turtles crawl up on the sand together to sychronize their nesting in what's called an "arridaba." DETAILS: https://bit.ly/2RHCHw6

Don't you just hate it when you're taking a nap on the bottom of the ocean and a crab walks up and pinches you on the fin? I don't know if this is the crabs idea of a Bronco ride but that little crustacean seems to have more balls than brains.
