Welcome to SDMT’s DESIGNER CORNER: where we spotlight the amazing artists and technicians who bring our shows to life. Today, we have MIKE BUCKLEY, SDMT Set Des...igner! Mike’s love for set design stemmed from his love of architecture. He then caught the acting bug and attended UCLA for Theatre Arts. It wasn’t until he took a Scenic Design course that he realized set design was his true passion. He went on to receive his MFA in Scenic Design from UCLA. Mike’s design process starts with analyzing the script. He then works with the director to imagine ways to bring the artistic vision to life. Once a design is chosen, Mike focuses on the details that bring the world together, from paints to fabrics to decor. Though a hard pick, Mike’s favorite set he has designed for SDMT was She Loves Me because he got to explore the Art Nouveau style. Check out our full interview below! In collaboration with Trifecta students and the cast of the 2001 Tony Award-Winning Broadway Revival of 42nd Street, we present to you the tap-tastic choreograp...hy of 42ND STREET! Everyone in the SDMT community was incredibly disheartened when we had to cancel our pre-professional production of 42nd Street. Determined to give San Diego teen actors the chance to showcase their skills, choreographer and member of the 2001 Broadway Revival cast Tamlyn Shusterman organized this virtual dance routine featuring the best and brightest of San Diego teen talent and stars of the 2001 Revival! As an original cast member of the 42nd Street 2001 revival, Tamlyn is familiar with the power of theater during difficult times. Her cast performed 42nd Street two days after the tragedy of 9/11. Tamlyn reached out to her former cast members asking if they would join in a virtual collaboration with her students to bring communities together through theatre once more. While we are saddened to not produce this show this year, we hope that you enjoy this virtual performance of the iconic choreography and we hope to see you back in the theatre soon! SDMT is proud to introduce a new series called #SDMTUniversity to highlight all the young talent we have working on and off stage for our productions! First up,... we have AMANDA TSAI, a Westview High School student who has worked with us as a Stage Management Intern and Followspot Operator! Amanda first got involved with SDMT after her high school theatre director, Robert Townsend, recommended her for an SM internship for our production of All Shook Up last summer. After that, she became a followspot operator for our productions of Man of La Mancha and A Christmas Story! Amanda’s favorite part of working with SDMT is working with and learning from its amazing people who become like a second family. She loves being a part of the magic that we get to create! We asked Amanda if she had any advice for other young artists entering the world of professional theatre, here’s what she had to say: Don’t be afraid to jump in, and don’t underestimate yourself. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice and take every opportunity you can to learn and grow. Thank you so much, Amanda!
