Get to know our HOPE Counselors! Today we are featuring Desmond, Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee: Q: What is your name & job title/license/certifications? ... A: Desmond Harvey, Marriage and Family Therapist, Trainee. Q: What type of therapy do you specialize in? A: I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and incorporate other cognitive models such as CT, DBT & ACT. I feel a person’s thoughts are very impactful on the way that person feels and behaves. Q: What inspired you to become a therapist? A: I have always had a passion for helping others, however, I was in the trucking industry, and was not feeling fulfilled and thought there must be more to life. I decided on going back to school but was unsure on what to do. While signing up for school and going over the degree programs I came across the counseling psychology, which after much research, was perfectly suited to what I needed to do. Q: What is the most rewarding part of being a therapist? A: Seeing a client who when they first came to therapy has been having great difficulties maintaining an effective life, then the client tells you the great impact you have made in his/her life, and you also see the change and growth happening before your eyes; it is very humbling. Additionally, I have personally grown immensely resulting from seeing clients. Q: What is a common quote or piece of advice you like to give to clients? A: "Nothing changes if nothing changes." Q: What do you know now that you didn't know when you started your career as a therapist? A: That being a good listener would be so vital to the therapeutic process. Q: What is the biggest myth or misconception about therapy? A: That only weak people or people with serious issues seek therapy. Q: What are your favorite mental health books and/or resources you like to recommend to clients? A: Clients who have been adopted and having attachment issues: The primal wound by Nancy Newton Verrier. Clients who find it difficult to accept themselves and be vulnerable and constantly chasing the image of who they are trying to be: The gift of imperfection by Brenè Brown. Get to know our HOPE Therapists! Today we are featuring Natalie, Couples and Family Therapist Trainee: Q. What is your name & job title? A. My name is Natalie Hahn. I received my B.A. in Psychology with Honors from Portland State University as well as a minor in Child and Family Studies. I am currently a M.A. student and Couples and Family Therapist trainee.... Q. What type of therapy do you specialize in? A. My style of therapy can best be described as client centered, collaborative, and holistic. I believe you are the expert on yourself and it is my honor to support you in finding your inner light. I enjoy using artistic, somatic, and holistic therapeutic experiences when applicable as well as narrative and strength based theories to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves. While I work with individuals, couples, and families, I have a passion for working with children, teens, and the LGBTQIA+ community. Q. What inspired you to become a therapist? A. As a teen, I struggled deeply with mental health which is how I found myself on the couch of a therapist's office. It was through my experiences, the highs and the lows, that I learned the value of therapy. I believe that therapy works best when you find the right person, and for that reason, I began to see my identity, who I am as a person, and my experiences are not only unique to me, but can help others feel less alone in their experiences. Q. What is the most rewarding part of being a therapist? A. Nothing beats the feeling of a text from a client that they had their first good day in months or the sight of a smile breaking after a long time in hiding. Q. What is a common quote or piece of advice you like to give to clients? A. "Where you are is not who you are." Q. What do you know now that you didn't know when you started your career as a therapist? A. That therapists are human, too! Q. What are your favorite mental health books and/or resources you like to recommend to clients? A. I recommend anyone going through grief read The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion and I recommend every human dealing with human emotions read David Foster Wallace's essay, This is Water. Get to know our HOPE Therapists! Today we are featuring Shohreh, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. Q. What is your name & job title? A. My name is Shohreh White. I am an Associate Marriage and Family therapist and an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor. ... Q. What type of therapy do you specialize in? A. I love doing CBT, Experiential therapy including Empty chair, and I am planning on doing Animal Assisted Therapy once I am licensed which is just around the corner. Q. What inspired you to become a therapist? A. I almost feel as though this profession chose me. I had initially wanted to be a veterinarian and had started my education down that path. In college I took a career development class for fun and found that through the Myer Briggs personality test, Therapist was the top profession it suggested. That led me to looking into the profession by taking one psychology class, which then led to another psychology class and so on. I was hooked. Psychology is ever evolving and I love that. I am thirsty for knowledge and I love helping people. I am so happy that one fun class led me to becoming a therapist. Q. What is the most rewarding part of being a therapist? A. It's very fulfilling helping people grow and helping people find the potential in themselves that you see in them. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Q. What is a common quote or piece of advice you like to give to clients? A. Your task is not to seek for love but to seek and find all the blockages within yourself that you have built against it. - Rumi. (This quote sums up the work I do with clients in session) Whatever happens around you, don't take it personally...Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. - Don Miguel Ruiz Q. What do you know now that you didn't know when you started your career as a therapist? A. I did not know all the work a person does to become a therapist. Not only do you have to get a Masters degree but you also have to do 3000 hours of work prior to being able to take an exam to obtain your license. It's a lot but I value every minute because I have gained so much experience. Q. What is the biggest myth or misconception about therapy? A. That a person is weak or has to have a mental illness if they have seeked therapy. Therapy is more about finding yourself, finding balance, and gaining professional support. Q. What are your favorite mental health books and/or resources you like to recommend to clients? A. I recommend books based on what my clients and I are working on. I have a large library of great books but here are a few that I tend to recommend. The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz Inner Wisdom by Dr. Wayne Dyer The Mind Of The Soul by Gary Zukav How to love yourself by Louise L.Hay The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor Brain Lock by Jeffrey M. Schwartz The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge https://www.hope-counselingcenter.org/meet-our-therapists
