The CDE has taken away the option of ignoring timelines. Schools are now going to be held accountable for all timelines as they were prior to the abrupt end to in person school.

While attending a meeting at a Charter School last week we were told that they would not be offering certain services as outlined in the IEP due to COVID-19. They stated that they would not offer PE to any students and so APE was off the table - we knew this wasn't per government standards so we looked this up - below is a post regarding Covid-19 and PE, school must still offer PE, they don't have to offer as many hours as prior to distance learning, but they must still off...er it. APE is an IEP service and all services are still required (as you can see in a post below from CDE and USDOE) so they must offer APE as well as all other services in the IEP, switching them to collaboration is not a change in how they deliver the service it is a change to the service. Our plan is to send this same information to the school and ask them where they are finding guidance that states otherwise. What is ironic is they offered better services during the Spring shutdown than they are offering now that school is reopened. Many charter schools come up with reasons why they can avoid following the law. This is one of the better charter schools we have worked with, but they are still trying to get around the law by lying to parents. They have told the parents that they are no longer funded as well as they were due to distance learning and that the state is allowing these changes. The state is not allowing for any reduction to services. Charter schools are public schools, they are publicly funded and they must adhere to public school standards. If they don't, they are merely stealing money from children who attend public schools that follow the rules, please hold them accountable and don't allow them to take money from the schools that are following the rules.

A couple of friends with a children with special needs were discussing how they keep their son's participating in distance learning. Below is a little that might help others know what to do: We bought a smart tv so we can sync his ipad and mirror and so far we have had 3 successful zooms. Not perfect but at least he isnt running away. Being able to see his teacher and therapist big makes a huge difference. This seems to be much better than using the laptop. My son is older and is able to manage with the laptop, but I thought I would be willing to try this if the laptop wasn't a good match.
