Repost @a Lunar New Year begins on February 12 this year! Why does it matter that we call it Lunar New Year and not just Chinese New Year? Because many communities in Asia and in the Asian diaspora around the world celebrate this significant holiday! By calling it Chinese New Year, multiple groups who celebrate it too are excluded. Already, the Asian community experiences so much erasure and over-generalization. Let's not perpetuate that. Language matters and impact matters.... Last week, I posted this same content in my stories, and heard from an overwhelming number of you. Many of you asked if I could make this into a shareable post because it resonated. So many stories were shared, such as having to explain repeatedly to friends that it's not just Chinese New Year, when having an East/Southeast Asian face means society assumes you're Chinese, and a general lack of awareness. (You can see the original story in my Festivals Story Highlights.) So, when can you call it Chinese New Year? Think: who is your audience? Call it Chinese New Year (though it sounds a little redundant) to those who identify as Chinese. Call it Tt to those who are Vietnamese. And so forth... Or call it Lunar New Year, if you are just not sure! Being Asian is not a monolith. Do not over-simplify or over-generalize our identity. In the past several weeks, I've seen Lunar New Year book posts shared with books with just any Asian character. Not all Asians celebrate Lunar New Year, and not all books with Asian characters or Asian food is a Lunar New Year book. And YES, we need A LOT more cultural representation in books about LNY. Another note: the Chinese pronunciation in my slides is Mandarin. There are more than 200 Chinese dialects, and pronunciation differs depending on the dialect. Also, I may not have not captured all communities who celebrate, so please drop a note if I missed any nuances. Lunar New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, and occurs sometime between mid-January to mid-February. It is a time of amazing food, family togetherness, and newness. If you celebrate - Happy New Year to you soon! If you don't celebrate, thanks for learning.

Reposting @hisueyun doing the work all non-Black POC and others should be! Self-directed learning. We aren't sponsored by google to say this, but it's a pretty good tool. ++++++++ Today, I chose to spend time researching and learning about Black history in the United States. I don’t want to take up too much space, but I think diving into Black history beyond textbooks is crucial in relearning our true American history. Please drop your favorite Black accounts and small busine...sses in the comments (and support them!). #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistoryEveryDay #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory #BlackLivesMatter #BLM #BlackLivesStillMatter #Whitewashing #WhitewashedHistory #HistoryBooks #AmericanHistory #WhitePrivilege #WhiteFragility #DismantleWhiteSupremacy #Racism #Antiracism #Antiracist #AntiracistEducation #BlackWallStreet #TulsaRaceMassacre #Tulsa #TulsaOklahoma #Juneteenth #13thAmendment #Emancipation #Handlettering #Handlettered #LadiesWhoDesign #BLMArt See more

we know elections actually only serve a small portion of citizens in the United States. Here’s a resource by @nysylc on how to support people who are undocumented in the face of such a dangerous election. #repost The #elections are right around the corner and there are a lot of fears in the #undocumented #immigrant community regardless of what the results are. Now is the time to prepare and think through the things you can do, that are in your control, that make you feel sa...fe, loved, empowered and at peace. It is okay to distract yourself right now and to avoid the news all together. But remember you can seek out support from a mental health professional. You have the right to healthcare services in #NYC regardless of #immigration status from the HHC system, community clinics, NYCCARE, sometimes medicaid and more. We invite you to a post-election night virtual hangout coordinated by our educator team @teachdreamnyc and Dream Team Network @nysylc_dtn. Students in a Dream Team or those interested in our Dream Team Network, and advisors looking to connect with other advisors, this space is for you! We love you. We see you. We are in this together. #debates2020 #homeishere #heretostay #nyc #covid19 #november #mentalhealth

a reminder that our current political and economic system gives us nothing without the exploitation of others. Repost @realfoodmedia We all deserve safe and dignified working conditions, regardless of our occupation, immigration status, or gender. But Andrew Clarke, the Global President of @marswrigley, the largest and most profitable candy-maker in the world, is denying the people who work at the Mars warehouse in Joliet, IL basic safety protections socially distanced wor...k stations, screening and adequate warehouse sanitation AND refusing to give them the hazard pay they deserve. If that’s not all, Mars Wrigley also fired employees who came together to advocate for basic safety protections and hazard pay. No one should face retaliation for speaking out about workplace abuses! Today, we are asking you to take a minute to call Andrew Clarke at 312-794-6200 to demand hazard pay, adequate PPE, paid sick leave, clean workplaces + no more point system for Mars Warehouse employees! Today, let’s call Andrew and let him know that #NothingMovesWithoutUs!

Contact your City of Oakland Councilmember today urging them to not pass the proposed encampment management policy and send it back for revision! The proposed e...ncampment management policy bans 98% of the City from unhoused residents and hoards folx to the Port of Oakland and Coliseum area. This policy does not fix the issues. It does not provide permanent housing or humane short term shelter options such as tiny home villages or safe RV sites. We agree that rules and guidelines need to be applied to encampments. People are living in mess and trash. We are living next to the mess and trash. Folx are in crisis and neighborhoods are deteriorating. The City of Oakland AND County of Alameda has resources to deal with the blight, trash, illegal dumping and sanitation lets hold them accountable. Housing is a basic human right. Open the vacant buildings, home and land to house people moving folx off the street and out of encampments. Lastly, let’s get folx the wraparound services (health, mental wellness, addiction, financial education, legal support, housing case management) they need to stabilize their families. @villageoakland + Just Cities + East Oakland Collective spent 9 months on a plan to house Oakland’s unhoused now! In honor of #filipinxamericanhistorymonth we share a post from @bulosancenter honoring the memory of Larry Itilong and his contributions to the movement for improved living and working conditions for farm workers. REPOST: @bulosancenter As yesterday marked the 55th Anniversary of the Delano Grape Strike, please enjoy these Archival items from the Bulosan Center's Welga Archive. Although the Welga Archive expanded to include broad aspects of the Filipinx Diaspora, the majori...ty of the collections focus on the Manong's involvement in farmworker history and the labor struggle of the mid 20th century. Check out the archive at welgadigitalarchive.omeka.net! We’ve decided to start a GoFundMe. It’s ambitious, as the auction we’re aiming for is this weekend, and I’m sure there will be other auctions in the future, but...
