I’ve always grown up around people of different races, ethnicities, creeds, even people who prefer mayo over mustard. But this is the first year I’ve taken the time to really pay attention. Going to BLM protests, reading personal stories, LISTENING. I knew there was struggle, but I didn’t realize the full scope. Katrina Davis has been a friend of mine for years. She must have a magnetic field surrounding her because when I saw her on stage, I instantly knew this was someone ...who was going to shine in comedy. I knew I wanted to be her friend, so I did what I always do, and introduced myself. That was 4-5 years ago and since then Katrina has never stopped wowing me as a performer and human. Her perspective is unique, her bits are relatable, and her prowess on stage is like a lioness who could attack at any minute, however she’ll coyly eye you up before she does. Just when you relax because you thought it was safe, BAM! She sinks her comedic teeth into you and doesn’t let go until she walks off the stage, her teeth dripping with your soaked-up laughter. I’ve invited Katrina to do shows with me a bunch. This photo comes from Camp Trip, a 500 person desert festival. She closed out the show, brilliantly lit in a colorful tent with assorted silly weirdos laying on the floor, giggling uncontrollably from her jokes (and also probably some drugs). It was beautiful to take her into this bizarre world and watch her command the stage like it was an intimate club setting. I love Katrina so much and to hear her speak about what it means to be a black woman growing up and today was powerful, educational, and entertaining AF. I’m proud to call this brilliant woman a friend and colleague. I can’t wait to see where her journey leads her. For now, go to the comments and download the podcast.
