How to eliminate your Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). If your #downpayment for your #home was less than 20%, then your lender made you pay for private mortgage insurance. And it's very expensive. However, if you've paid down your loan balance and believe you may have at least 20% equity by now then you can call your lender and ask them to remove it. They will use your home's original appraised value. Another way to go around that is to call your lender and ask them if they ...will accept a new appraisal to reflect today's market value. The only drawback is that you have to pay for it out-of-pocket which will put you back about $400-$500. Given that private mortgage insurance costs at least a couple hundred a month, then it'll definitely be worth it if your lender decides to remove it.
