Hoping AB 626 will soon legitimize good old-fashioned home cooking sales!

Last night, AB 626 moved through the Senate Health Committee with a unanimous (7-0) vote of approval! With this hurdle cleared, we are feeling more confident th...an ever that home cooked food will be legalized by 2019. Thank you to C.O.O.K. Alliance members Mariza Ruelas (food activist), Peter Ruddock (Slow Food California), Bianca Blomquist (Small Business Majority), and Liz Allen (our legislative director) for their amazing support testimonies. Several Senators including Holly Mitchell (pictured) also spoke about the importance of this bill after Assemblymember Garcia's opening presentation. Thank you also to the nearly 100 organizations who have now written formal support letters and the hundreds of you that called your Senators last week this public support is what is propelling the bill through the legislature!

In three more days we will celebrate the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. I would love to share my writing about Tet with you. "Tet The Lunar New Year... My favorite holiday is Tet. The Lunar New Year, based on the Chinese calendar, is Tet in Vietnam. It is usually in January or February. On that holiday, the government offices, the banks and the schools are closed. They don’t work for one or two weeks. That time is for family. People who work far from their family must come back to their hometown , and spend their time together with their family. On Tet, Vietnamese people repair their houses and buy new clothes. In the South of Vietnam, they usually eat watermelon, Banh Chung, Banh Day, Banh Tet (mung beans with pork and sticky rice), Thit Kho Trung, Canh Kho Qua (duck eggs with pork and bitter melon soup). On The Lunar New Year Eve, they put the food, flowers, tea and candles on a table in the front of their house, and turn on the lights, light incense, and then they invite their ancestors (dead relatives) to come to their house to enjoy special time together with them. My family celebrates Tet until 3:00 or 4:00 am. I love the time when I give lucky money that I put in the red envelope to my young brothers, young sisters, nephews and I get it from my sisters, brothers. At that time, everyone in my family wears beautiful, new clothes. I always wear red clothes. We eat traditional food, dance, and play cards together. On this day, we usually go to the temple to pray for good things for our family, and friends. Last year, I celebrated Tet holiday in the USA, and I could not compare it to Tet in Vietnam. I don’t like all the noise from my big family when we are together on Tet, but I miss it when I am in the USA. I miss how my mother used to cut watermelon on the first day of the year. My whole family ate it and wished each other good luck. The red color is lucky, so we eat watermelon. Now my older sister cuts it on Tet. I will go back to Vietnam to celebrate Tet this year. These are the reasons why Tet is my favorite holiday in my country. See more
