HMRI neurosciences researcher Xianghong Arakaki MD, PhD (NIA R56AG063857) led the electrophysiology core of a brain aging study to unmask abnormal gamma power in healthy individuals at high-risk of developing Alzheimer's disease that combined memory challenge with quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). Gamma as high frequency brain activities are involved in attention, senses (smell, sight, and hearing), mental processing, and perception, which change in Alzheimer’s dis...ease (AD). The pilot findings encourage further investigations in developing neurophysiology-based markers for identifying individuals at risk, to help improve our understanding of AD pathophysiology, and results were published in Frontiers. The brain aging study was led by Michael Harrington, MB, ChB, FRCP (L. K. Whittier Foundation). https://doi.org/10.3389/fnagi.2020.574214 See more
It’s mental health awareness day and a perfect time to share results from an angiogenesis study, co-authored by our own Dr. Anju Vasudevan and published in Science. Mental illness can be prevented by administering nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to the prenatal forebrain blood vessels, resulting in repair of angiogenesis defects and normalization of brain development. https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/6/41/eabb9766
Thanks Pasadena Now for helping us share the critical findings in our e-cigarette and vaping study. http://ow.ly/OP4s50BGBaz
HMRI and UCI Vaping Study results showcased in @ScienceDaily. \https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//200928163756.htm
Our own Dr. Robert Kloner and researchers from HMRI and University of California, Irvine had results from their joint E-cig/Vaping Study published in the JAHA. The results point to the E-cig device heating elements as the cause of lung injury. Read more online: https://hmri.org/hmri-results-published-in-journal-of-amer/
It's National Daughters' Day, and we love all the pics of your daughters. It's also a good day to encourage their dreams. Even though more women have careers today, they still only make up roughly 30% of the science & engineering work force. If you have a female student exploring a career in science and research, share our Summer Student Program with her! Maybe 2021 is the year for her! https://hmri.org/education/
September is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. Do you know the early signs? If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these or other concerning memory signs, don't wait to talk to your doctor.
Strabismus Lazy Eye is a condition where one eye is misaligned or positioned differently than the other eye constantly. When left untreated, it can seriously impact the brain's ability to receive images and process messaging sent from the strabismic eye. Learn more about key treatments at our lecture series this Tuesday, September 15, from 4-5 p.m. via zoom... details at: https://hmri.org/hmri-lecture-series/
Wishing you and your family a safe and happy Labor Day!
"The Bob Mackin Memorial Lecture Series" is showcasing "Treatment Options for Strabismus-Lazy Eye" on Sept. 15, from 4-5 p.m., via Zoom, led by Dr. Ara Keshishian, Physician & Bio Medical Engineer, Pinpointeyes - Hyperion Laboratories, Inc. Details at: https://hmri.org/hmri-lecture-series/
Dr. Kimberly Shriner, infectious disease specialist, shared critical updates and proposed therapies at our recent "Researchers Roundtable." For a limited time, you can check it out at: http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp
Migraine suffers will cheer for this news! HMRI Scientific Director of Neuroscience Dr. Michael Harrington and his team have shed light on an area of focus that could lead to improved treatments long term. The study was shared on @Medscape & @ahsheadache. http://ow.ly/CtFh50B990q
One in four people in the world suffers from a neuropsychiatric disorder that could benefit from brain cell-therapy. A game-changing breakthrough that can help advance those therapies has come out of HMRI research from our one of our senior research scientists, Dr. Anju Vasudevan, and her colleagues. Their work, recently published in Molecular Psychiatry, uncovers a missing link in cell-therapy showing that when the right vascular cells are paired with neuronal cells, they work together successfully for brain repair and improvement of disease symptoms. In observance of #Juneteenth, HMRI will be closed on Friday, June 19th. This is a paid holiday for all HMRI employees. Juneteenth (aka Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day) is a holiday celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S.
