For those of us in Southern California, it's hard to imagine what it must be like to deal with record-breaking temperatures like those that are hitting the Mid-West this week. Check out these images from the Weather Channel.

There can be little doubt that in many ways the story of bridge building is the story of civilization. By it, we can readily measure an important part of a people’s progress. Franklin D Roosevelt, 1931

On This Day In Traffic and Transportation History: In 1974, President Richard M. Nixon signs the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, setting a new national maximum speed limit of 55 mph. In 1987, the law was amended and the speed limit raised to 65 mph (105 km/h) limits on certain roads. This law was repealed in 1995. And, the authority to set speed limits was given to the states.

HKA hopes everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! On this day in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill officially establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. On this day in 1931 in Engineering History, the first U.S. cloverleaf interchange to be built in the United States, at the junction of NJ Rt. 25 (now U.S. Rt. 1) and NJ Rt. 4 (now NJ Rt. 35) in Woodbridge, New Jersey, is featured on the cover of this week’s issue of the Engineering News-Record. (By contrast, a piece on the under-construction Hoover Dam was relegated to the journal’s back pages.)
