Completed and dedicated on November 11, 1920, our proud and venerable City Hall turns 100 this year. Modeled after after Philadelphia's Independence Hall, are incredibly grateful this structure remains as an anchor to our historic civic center. Plans for a civic center began in 1913 when South San Francisco City Board of Trustees purchased the land on Grand Avenue between Maple, Spruce and Miller Avenues. Architect Carl Werner had been selected for the job, however work wa...s postponed due to the war brewing in Europe. With the ending of World War I South San Francisco was finally able to proceed with construction of a city hall for the young, burgeoning city. The celebration was not hampered by the cold, wet weather. People turned out for the parade down Grand Avenue and joined the celebration that had to be moved into Fraternal Hall due to the rain. First prize for the the most beautifully decorated auto was awarded to the machine aptly named "In Memoriam." The California Golf Club of San Francisco was incorporated in the City and County of SF in 1918, thus the name even though the club is located in South San Francisco, San Mateo County. Its original location was slightly north of the San Francisco GC (1915) on land leased from the Spring Valley water company. South San Francisco's first fire department, Hose Company No. 1, was formed in 1892 and consisted entirely of volunteers. By 1900 their one and only hose was worn out and the town was left unprotected from fire. After a series of fires damaged homes and property, a Board of Fire was formed in 1901. Finally in 1902 they passed a Fire Tax to buy a new hose and equipment as well as build a hose house. In 1910, Ordinance 36 established an actual Fire Department - still using all volunteers. Eventually there were two more hose houses: one on Aspen and Linden Avenues the other on the new school house lot on Grand Avenue. Even after South San Francisco was incorporated, their Fire Department remained all volunteer until 1928.
