Playing Catch with Dad: #fathersandsons My dad and I used to play catch when I was just beginning to play baseball and learning how to catch, pitch, and hit. A...fter work, sometimes my dad would say yes to my pleas of Let me pitch to you! He’d kneel down against the house wall, outside of his studio, and I would stand back as far as I could throw the ball and try to hit his open glove. -- My baseball hero at that time was the Dodgers great Sandy Koufax, a flame ball thrower. Just like Sandy, I’d kick and rise my lead foot as high in the air as I could while leaning back, and then I would snap forward and throw that ball as hard as I could! -- If it were anywhere near a strike zone, my dad would call it so. But most of my pitches were wild balls. Inevitably, one of my pitches would be too high for my dad’s arm to reach and it would fly over his outstretched glove and through a windowpane of his studio. This happened virtually every time! My father never got angry. He would just drop his glove and say, Well, that’s it for today. And walk back into the house, grab a beer, sit on the couch, and read the Los Angeles Times Mirror newspaper. We could have switched places and my high throws would have hit our backyard fence. And I told my dad so several times. But for some reason, he preferred replacing his windows weekly. See more
