We see ALL: PCN all the time. But how often is it true? And why does it matter? Here are some pearls: Up to 90-95% of people labeled with a penicillin allergy are not allergic and can tolerate penicillin. For the people who were truly allergic (ie: had an IgE-mediated reaction to penicillin/amoxicillin), 80% will no longer be allergic 10 years later. Even 5 years out, 50% of people have lost their allergy. A penicillin allergy is associated with a higher risk of VRE, ...MRSA and C. diff infections as well as increased costs across both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Allergy testing is simple and has almost 99% negative predictive value. It can be done in a primary care office with the right training and equipment. Hippo PA Spotlight: Vicky is a proud graduate of the Keck School of Medicine of USC Physician Assistant program! She is a Medical Editor at Hippo Education and an emergency medicine and urgent care PA, but her most important job is being a mom to two amazing little girls (and one fluffy corgi). From a young age, she knew that she wanted to go into medicine, but it wasn’t until she was treated by a PA that she realized being a PA was the perfect mix of flexibility and responsi...bility. Since graduation, Vicky has worked in community emergency departments and urgent cares in Oregon, New Jersey, and Tennessee but her true passion is medical education. She enjoys college football, traveling with her husband, and helping out her local PA program. Fun fact: Vicky has an identical twin sister, Katy, who is an emergency medicine/urgent care nurse practitioner! See more
