"Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above." - Come Thou Fount How humbling it is that our hearts would so easily turn from God. But praise be to God that he is both loving and faithful, and that our souls are held fast in His sovereign hand! May the Gospel drive your heart to worship anew! ... With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s that time of year again when guys everywhere get all sorts of bad ideas. Serenading, for example, could be sweet. It could also turn four minutes into an eternity. But singing to one another is more Christian than you might think. In Colossians 3:16 Paul writes, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in yo...ur hearts to God. This is a profound word of instruction for the church that will greatly enrich the way we approach worshipping together, particularly in song. First, our singing must be Word-centered. Paul includes singing as a mode for the word of Christ to reside in us. Melody is memorable, and when used as a tool to highlight eternal truth, we give that truth a stronger foothold in our souls. Storing up scripture in our hearts and meditating on it day and night is commanded throughout the Bible, and even prayed for on our behalf by Jesus himself. Theological lyrics paired with beautiful melody is one way we can do this especially well, or richly as Paul would say. Second, our singing must be other-edifying. Contemporary Christian culture tends to highlight the one-on-one relationship Christians enjoy with God, especially in music. While this is absolutely appropriate, we must be careful not to miss the corporate aspect of singing. Paul tells us to teach and admonish one another with our singing. Music on a Sunday morning is not just about you praising God. It is designed for you to engage in a teaching and admonishing ministry for your brothers and sisters. It is as much horizontal as it is vertical. Finally, our singing must be God-glorifying. Paul reminds us that this must all be done with hearts full of gratitude to the God who lavishes grace and mercy upon us. May our singing reflect what is true in the heart of every believer. We look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday!

The angel said to the shepherds, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. I would venture to say that when most people think of Christmas this year, joy may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Thoughts might be more like, Finally something good this year. Or, At last, the year is almost over. But for the follower of Jesus, great joy is what should characterize Christmas and every other day of the year. After all joy is listed in Galatians 5...:22 as part of the fruit of the Spirit. And Nehemiah writes, the joy of the Lord is your strength. In a year marked with Covid, a contentious election, racial strife and much more, where do we find that joy? The angel gives us the answer. The joy is found in the good news. The good news that a Savior was born that Christmas night so long ago; a Savior who is Christ the Lord. How does that baby’s birth bring good news, even in a not so good news year? Jesus’ birth means God is with us. God has not forgotten us. God has not abandoned us. God looks on us, recognizes our need and comes to meet that need. Yes, the world around us seems crazy and getting worse. The good news doesn’t change that. The good news changes YOU. I read a statement once that said, Don’t tell God you have big problems. Tell your problems you have a BIG God. That is the good news. That is the source of real joy. Not that we enjoy troubles, but that God is with us through the troubles. Yes, you can experience real joy this Christmas, and every day following Christmas. All you need to do is ask for and receive the greatest gift of all forgiveness and a restored relationship with the God who created you. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. If you want to know more about how to have that joy, reach out to us at Hillside Church. We would love to share the good news that brings great joy!

There are so many competing narratives today, depending on which side of the "political (or cultural) aisle" you sit. But for Christians, it seems like we have lost our narrative by tainting it or blending it with that of a political party or meta-narrative. We don't want to be like Martha distracted by so many things; we want to be like Mary, keeping the main thing the main thing. Join Pastor Keith and Pastor Mark tomorrow morning for a new episode of Out of My Mind as they talk about shedding false Messiahs and re-establishing the right priority, particularly in light of Advent Season. Tune in at gracetoliveradio.org/podcast.

Happy New Year from Hillside Church! As we enter 2021 and begin a new sermon series on evangelism, we encourage you to think on ways you can share God's grace, mercy, and the message of Jesus Christ with the people God has placed in your life. "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!'" - Romans 10:14-15

With January 1st right around the corner many Christians are making big plans to read the Bible more in 2021. This is a great thing! Not just in January, but in every month of the year. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and it’s all about the Word of God. It gives us many reasons to take Bible reading seriously in the coming year and every year. Here are just a few: First, take Bible reading seriously because the Bible is true. Psalm 119:160 says, The sum of your... word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. We live in a world filled with error. Everyone seems to have an opinion on everything, and they can’t all be right. What a blessing, that we can depend on the Word of God! We can know that what we read in God’s Word is absolutely true. Second, take Bible reading seriously because the Bible is unchanging. That same verse, Psalm 119:160 says everyone of your righteous rules endures forever. Have you noticed how quickly styles change in our world? Things that were considered cool 10 years ago, are now considered weird or dorky. This is also true of how our world sees morality. Things that were once seen as evil are now considered good, and things that were once seen as good are now considered evil. How can we survive in this kind of moral climate? By holding fast to God’s Word. God’s word is unchanging. What he calls evil is always evil. What he calls good is always good. In this everchanging moral climate we can rejoice that we have the solid ground of God’s Word to stand on. Third, take Bible reading seriously because the Bible is precious. If there is one message of Psalm 119 this is it. The Word of God is precious. Psalm 119:103 says, How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! What makes the Bible so precious? It comes to us from a precious God. The Bible is the very Word of God. When you open up your Bible, you are hearing from a faithful, loving and precious God. So open up your Bible!

You’ve probably heard the statement, that’s above my pay grade. We usually say it when we don’t understand something or aren’t aware of all the information. The writer of Psalm 131 acknowledges that some things are above his pay grade, and he’s ok with that. My heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. The unnamed Psalmist is saying that there are some things in life he doesn’t understan...d, some things far above his ability to comprehend. But that doesn’t bother him. In fact, he goes on to say that he has calmed and quieted his soul. In other words, he’s at peace. Life is confusing. There are questions we can’t answer. We don’t have all the information. How do we respond? Do we feel entitled to know everything? Are we restless until we can reconcile every seeming contradiction or conflict? Do we get frustrated with those we think are withholding something from us? Are we fearful or anxious? Romans 11:33-36 reminds us that we can’t look into God’s mind and that we can’t understand all His ways. Paul goes on to ask, who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? There are some things that are simply above our pay grade. We aren’t meant to know them or understand them. Instead, we are to do as the Psalmist says. We are to calm and quiet our souls, trusting that the all-knowing, all-wise, all-powerful Creator of our souls is working according to His good plan. Next time you’re tempted to worry, fret, get frustrated or fearful over something in life you don’t know or understand, remember the closing words of Psalm 131, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore. Let that truth calm your soul and bring you peace, knowing that there is no greater confidence than knowing that God, Himself, knows it all.
