Dr. Hans Selye first described General Adaptation Syndrome in 1950 with three stages that act as a guide to assist healthcare professionals with their evaluation and early intervention strategies. Although clinically defined in stages, Dr. Selye cautioned that General Adaptation Syndrome rarely occurs in a pure form. It’s complicated by underlying actions of the stressors, so is really better defined as a spectrum. This spectrum, and our central system response to it, is referred to as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal or HPA Axis. Explore the connection between General Adaptation Syndrome and the HPA Axis further.

Re-post: We know that low iron causes anemia but we don’t think much about low Omega-3. Most doctors don’t either. . Part of the reason is that Omega-3 deficiency symptoms are shared by other conditions, so they are easily overlooked or misdiagnosed.... . Scientists have recently given a name to Omega-3 deficiency it is FADS or Fatty Acid Deficiency Syndrome and some of the signs of deficiency is: . Dry skin: Omega-3 oils keep your skin youthful and moistened, so a shortage will quickly show in your skin. Your skin is the first place to show signs of deficiency. No amount of moisturizing creams will fix that. . Dull lifeless hair: Omega-3’s are also great for keeping your hair shiny and nourished from the roots. They keep scalp inflammation at bay, preventing hair loss. . Brittle nails: If your nails are soft, peel easily or are brittle, this could be a sign of an omega-3 deficiency. . Difficulty sleeping and fatigue: Omega-3 deficiency can lead to insomnia or concentration difficulties. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, fatigue is a well-known sign of an omega-3 deficiency. . Joint pain: Omega-3’s are anti-inflammatory. That’s why those with arthritis benefit from supplements of them. Joint pain could be a sign that you are lacking them. . Attention and concentration problems can be signs of Omega-3 deficiency, as well as mood related signs such as irritability and mood swings. Another sign is low frustration tolerance where you basically have a short fuse. . Try to eat more fatty fish. Even if you aren’t deficient, there’s no real harm in getting quality fish in your diet.
