Dear Highlands Community, On behalf of the Highlands Recreation District Board of Directors I would like to make you aware of an upcoming construction project that will take place at the Highlands Recreation Center. Beginning this month, work will commence on a seismic retrofit of the gym and social room. In addition, a new bathroom facility will be constructed adjacent to the social room and a new path to this part of our facility and an enhanced deck will be added. ... Construction is slated to last approximately five months. The HRD staff has worked hard to develop plans to minimize disruption during construction. The most significant impact will be to recreation programs that use the gym. The fitness center will also be closed during construction. The After-School Program will not be effected. You will be contacted by a member of the HRD staff if a class or program, in which you are enrolled, is impacted by construction. We are excited to kick-off this facility upgrade and envision this being the first step in a multi-year, phased project to modernize the Highlands Recreation District facilities. If you have questions please contact a Highlands Recreation District Board Member or Cathy Haas, the District's General Manager. Regards, Eric Olbekson President, Highlands Recreation District Board of Directors

Can you believe that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake? The Loma Prieta earthquake shook for over 20 seconds, clocking in at 6.9 on the Richter scale. Let’s use this as a reminder that a disaster can strike anywhere at any time and we as a community should be prepared for all future emergencies. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact the Highlands Community ...and surrounding neighborhoods, and trains us in basic disaster response skills such as: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT training is made up of 5 hands-on classes, and 1 Disaster Simulation Day. You are required to attend the disaster simulation day to receive your official certification. Classes begin on Monday, September 23rd at 6:30pm. Please email Jeff Schwartz at [email protected] or call the Highlands Recreation Center office at (650) 341-4251 with any questions or to register for CERT Classes today. ** Have you already taken CERT and are an active CERT Member? Would you like to touch on skills or get a better understanding of the CERT program? Please enroll in CERT and take this class as a refresher. The more neighbors that we can get trained, the better off we will be in an emergency.

Pool Update: Due to winds being projected at over 25 miles per hour this afternoon, we will be dropping the dome at 1pm for the safety of both our members and our staff.
