We are excited to announce our ManorCare Health Services Palm Harbor (FL) center has just received vaccines for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)! We are also ...proud to have been able to vaccinate the first skilled nursing center patient in the United States. Katy, an employee with ManorCare Health Services, volunteered to to be a part of Eli Lilly and Company’s new infusion trial to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Katy wanted to volunteer for the trial to help healthcare workers in the fight to end this pandemic. Thank you Katy! #HereForYou

Caring for a loved one is one of the most significant challenges life can present. We're here for the families and friends of our patients, too. Whether it’s to have a safe space to share feelings or to remember the memory of loved ones. Heartland Hospice serving Raleigh-Durham was faced with challenges this year when it came to planning their annual memorial service. However, instead of the typical in-person service that is held each year, the team was able to plan several events that ensured the participants would stay safe. Kristin Lassiter, bereavement coordinator, tells about the drive-thru events:

ProMedica Hospice serving North Central Ohio was able to keep a 33-year memorial tradition alive, even during a global pandemic! Emily Foreman, bereavement coordinator, details planning the event, why it was important to continue and what the event looked like this year compared to previous years.

ProMedica Home Medical Equipment provided wheelchairs to a local middle school to help give a student's peers a better understanding of what his life is like in a wheelchair. Putting ourselves in the shoes of others, so to speak, who face hardships in life that we may not have to face ourselves, helps us to understand and appreciate a little bit more." #HereForYou

Gordon Creamer, Heartland Hospice volunteer coordinator and chairperson for Heartland’s We Honor Veterans Committees in Maryland, details the importance of not only recognizing veterans, but also taking time to listen to their stories and truly understanding what their service means to each of them.

Pet therapy is one of the additional services many of our hospice agencies offer. Interacting with a friendly pet can help with any possible physical and mental issues. Pet interaction also helps produce a calming feeling, which can alleviate pain and reduce stress. Heartland Hospice serving Central Wisconsin has been utilizing pet volunteers since October 2012 when the agency first began caring for hospice patients.

Heartland Hospice serving North Central Indiana recently coordinated a blood drive with their neighbor, Senior Helpers. During these difficult times, Heartland and Senior Helpers wanted to ensure they could give back to those in need in the South Bend area.

MYTH: "I thought that hospice was only for patients with cancer. I didn't realize that my husband who suffered from Alzheimer's disease could have benefited from support from the hospice caregiving team too."

Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. This day is held as a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. Heartland Hospice would like to recognize all of the health care professionals and volunteers who dedicate their time to hospice and palliative care.
