Poor appetite in an elderly person can indicate a change of condition and it can be serious. Poor appetite is defined as eating less than what the person normally would eat at his or her baseline. Knowing the individual’s dietary history from family or caregiver will give you that information. An elderly person is vulnerable to malnutrition. Reduced food intake will put a person at risk for getting infection and deconditioning. Poor appetite can have other underlying conditi...ons such as infection (such as urinary tract infection), constipation, difficulty swallowing, difficulty with chewing, pain, depression, medication side effects and other conditions. At Healthy Living Residential Care, to make sure our residents have adequate nutrition, we monitor food intake and health conditions, and ensure that they have the food texture that is right for them, and that they have variety and nutrition in what they are fed.
