A shout out to our student life-savers California law, Assembly Bill No. 1719, now requires a majority of high school students to be trained in hands-only CPR. We are pleased to provide CPR, AED and choking skills training to students in the Sequoia Union High School District. It's comforting to know that literally thousands of students now have the skills to save lives in the community. Good job, students!

Resusci-Mitzi models our Anti-chocking trainer. This device demonstrates how to perform abdominal thrusts if someone is choking. It's one of the favorite parts of our first-aid training. When you thrust to simulate the ejection of an object blocking an airway, a Nerf plug pops out. A fun way to demonstrate a highly-effective life-saving procedure.Check out upcoming first-aid/cpr classes here: https://healtheducationservices.net/training

Health Education Services President/CEO, Julianne Brawner Empowering individuals to save lives A native of the Chicago area, Julianne Brawner moved to California in the 1960s. She worked as a nurse in a variety of different settings for several years in various staff and management positions. One evening while on duty, a child was brought in, suffering from a severe asthma attack. Julianne noticed that the parent of the child seemed so helpless, relying completely on emerge...ncy personnel to intervene. This revelation made her acutely aware of the need for citizens to be empowered with knowledge and to know how to respond to medical emergencies. At that time, (1970s), doctors had all the knowledge and patients followed their orders without question. This was before WebMD and other online resources were available. Thus later, what started out as a business of teaching continuing education courses to allied medical personnel quickly morphed into teaching the community newly emerging CPR and first-aid skills. Julianne and her nurse partner decided to provide emergency training directly to companies and the community at large and Health Education Services (HES) was born. Today the mission continues, but CPR practices have changed over the years. According to Julianne, ‘CPR and First Aid is constantly evolving based on the science of resuscitation and emergency care advances.’ Fortunately, HES stays abreast of the developments and teaches cutting-edge practices. When Automated External Defibrillators entered the public arena in 1996, Julianne was quick to see their value in the hands of the lay public as the definitive treatment for cardiac arrest. AEDs are now an important aspect of the HES business, with customers including Genentech, PG&E, UC Berkeley, Stanford, and Southern California Edison as well as many schools, businesses, and non- profits. As for the efficacy of AEDs, Julianne says, ‘We download the data from AEDs after use and it’s clear that in many cases these devices are having a positive outcome on survival.’ Julianne’s stewardship of HES and her hard work over the decades has helped save many lives. Meet our office mascot, Resusci-Mitzi. She's trained in canine first aid / CPR (Canine Pomeranian Rascal). Not bad at AEDs either (Asking for Edible Delights).

How much do you know about CPR and cardiac arrest? Cardiac arrest is the sudden loss of heart function and is often fatal. Each year in the United States, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital setting. Learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) gives you the skills to keep the heart pumping until medical staff arrives on site. Without CPR the patient will die.
