Veterans coming to Gettysburg for the 1913 Reunion. Man, the thought of merely sitting in their camps or walking the battlefield with them is practically intox...icating! To them, it was just their lives and experiences--to us today, we ponder so much that became rather commonplace to them, as future generations will doubtless do for all the inaccessible generations before them. I hadn't intended on getting all philosophical tonight. :) https://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/ggbain.13834/ See more

In the early months of 1862, Confederate soldiers in several regiments of General Albert Sidney Johnston’s Army of the Mississippi were issued a new type of ammunition for their rifle-muskets. It came in bundles of ten cartridges, neatly tied with string, with a label that identified the packet as ammunition For Rifle Musket /53, Bullet .568 Diar. The cartridges looked nothing like the ammunition the soldiers had been issued before. An ordnance officer carefully explained ...to the soldiers that this was the English cartridge that had been purchased by Confederate agents in the United Kingdom and imported through the Yankee blockade in the holds of fast steamships. After the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, Confederate soldiers realized the English cartridge was much easier and faster to load than the old American style. Ordnance officers wrote back to the Confederate Ordnance Bureau, requesting more of the English-made cartridges that were easy to load, and did not clog the rifle with black powder fouling. This is the story of an obsolete rifle cartridge. It changed our world. Check out Brett Gibbons’ new book and find out more about the role of The English Cartridge in the American Civil War and elsewhere.

Memorial Day began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, a holiday commemorated by the Grand Army of the Republic, the fraternal organisation of Union Civil War veterans. Decoration Day was inspired by many acts of respect and patriotism surrounding soldiers’ graves including notable cases with former slaves going out of their way to decorate and protect Union soldiers’ graves in the American South. General Logan’s General Order Number 11 was issued on the 5th of May 1868.... Filmed in the historic Santa Ana Cemetery, a part of the Orange County Cemetery District https://youtu.be/szlYWP98-YA

In US army ammunition packages for 58-cal rifle muskets, there was often a mix of regular Minie style bullets and Williams patent cleaner bullets. This is a p...ackage of original rifle musket cartridges from the US Civil War that a friend of the page carefully opened and photographed. This pack had not been opened in 150 years. After taking many high definition photos the pack was put back together using the original string. The Williams bullets are in the dyed blue paper cartridges. There are six Williams Type 3 cartridges and only four regular Minie (Burton) cartridges. This indicates that this particular pack of cartridges was made some time probably before August 1864. This pack also contained a paper tube of musket caps. Read more about the Williams bullet (and much more) on the website: https://www.papercartridges.com/williams-bullets.html
