As we close out Women’s History Month, the Hayward Fire Department is recognizing Fire Captain Trisha Reardon. A 20 year veteran of the HFD, Trisha has stepped up for our Hayward Community, assisting with COVID-19 Testing last year, assisting in Los Angeles County Emergency rooms with her paramedic skills during peak COVID-19 cases, and has been a valued instructor at the Girls Fire Camp where she dedicates her time to inspiring young women to join the fire service. Thank you, Trish, for all you do for HFD and our community. We are proud of you as a strong female leader inspiring the next generation!

Weather Advisory: Heavy rain in the forecast | Aviso meteorológico: Fuertes lluvias en el pronóstico With heavy rain in the forecast, pre-filled sandbags are available for residents for pick up outside the Hayward Animal Shelter at 16 Barnes Court. Residents will be allowed up to 10 pre-filled bags per household. A self-fill sandbag station is also set up should residents need additional bags.... Between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., residents are encouraged to leave a message to report flooding issues to the Streets Division at (510) 881-7745. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the East Bay Hills and Valleys and is valid from 11AM PDT Sunday(10/25) through 11AM PDT Tuesday (10/27). In addition to this, a High Wind Warning will be in effect from Sunday (10/25) at 4M PDT through Monday (10/26) 10AM. Expecting to be the strongest wind event thus far this fall, precautionary measures are recommended. Public Safety Power Shutoffs could occur as well in high risk areas of Alameda County. Please be careful.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of Alameda County from 10pm tonight (10/21/20) and is in effect until 8:00am Friday, 10/23. Stay safe.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect from 5am Wednesday to 11am Friday due to high winds and dry conditions. The greatest threat will be in elevations above 1,000 feet across these regions, particularly in the East Bay Hills. In addition, PG&E has advised a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff for certain parts of Alameda County. Specifically, the Oakland Hills area east of Piedmont, Southeast Fremont near Calaveras Road, and Northern Livermore by Vasco Road with shut offs to begin around 8pm Wednesday, October 14.

In the hot summer months it is important to prepare for the potential of power outages. Extended power outages may impact the whole community and the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly. A power outage may: Disrupt communications, water, and transportation.... Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services. Cause food spoilage and water contamination. Prevent use of medical devices. PROTECT YOURSELF DURING A POWER OUTAGE: Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. Only use generators outdoors and away from windows. Do not use a gas stove to heat your home. Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges. Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices. If safe, go to an alternate location for heat or cooling. Check on neighbors. Be informed about potential disaster risks in your area. The City of Hayward is what is known as a Wildland Urban Interface, meaning we live in an area where human made structures and infrastructure (e.g., cell towers, schools, water supply facilities, etc.) are in or adjacent to areas prone to wildfire. One way to protect your home from the threat of wildfires is to create a fire-resistant zone that is free of leaves, debris, or flammable materials for at least 30 feet from... your home. We can help. The Hayward Fire Department is now accepting applications from Hayward and Fairview Fire Protection District residents for free chipping of tree limbs and branches. All residential properties east of Mission Boulevard and south of D Street to the border of Union City are eligible to participateareas considered to be at relatively high risk of fire due to proximity to open spaces with grass land and brush. To participate, residents must complete the 2020 Request for Chipping Form. They will receive an email confirmation of acceptance to participate and will be placed on a schedule on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents are responsible for cutting and stacking the tree limbs and branchesand a contractor hired by the City will come to the front of each property to do the chipping. Grant funding is available to help senior, disabled, or low-income residents with expenses associated with cutting, trimming, and stacking limbs and branches. When building out your emergency kit and adding food remember: Following a disaster there may be power outages that could last for several days. Stock canned foods, dry mixes and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils. Consider the following things when putting together your emergency food supplies:... Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Choose foods your family will eat.
