It's that time of year! Our California Newts are on the move. Please keep an eye out for (and avoid) newts on the road. They are particularly active when the road are wet, although they never seem to be in a hurry.....

We've had another rare nocturnal visitor at the reserve! Spotted skunks are rarely seen at Hastings. Based on the spot patterns we determined that we had at least two individuals, at the same camera, within days of each other. We also got footage of a handstand display, as the spotted skunk responded to the camera flash. #spottedskunk, #mammalwatching, #cameratraps

We've had lots of exciting discoveries on cameras around the reserve in the last couple of weeks. One of the more exciting discoveries is also one of the smallest. We knew they were here, but no one ever sees them.....Behold....a LONG TAILED WEASEL!!!

Join us to learn about the second most interesting carnivore roaming the hills of Hastings (and throughout California). We will be hosting a virtual seminar with badger expert Dr. Jessie Quinn this Friday, Sept 11 at 7pm. In her talk, entitled: There are badgers here? Getting to know an elusive California carnivore, Dr. Quinn will discuss her research on badgers, and what we know about the state of badgers in California. **Cachagua neighbors** If your house was lost or damaged in the #CarmelFire, we can provide housing while you assess the damage. We can’t provide long-term housing, but if you need a spot to call home for a few days or a weeks, we’d love to help. Send an email to HastingsReserve (at) berkeley.edu for more info.

We've had a lot of folks interested in contributing to the reserve these last few days. The best way is through the Friends of Hastings website at UC Berkeley. Any money we receive be used to help rebuild some lost infrastructure, help researchers who lost valuable equipment, support the Cachagua community, and importantly help ensure that we have the necessary resources and equipment to fight the next fire that threatens the reserve. There are also lots of folks in the are...a who need help, if you'd like to spread your gift around a bit. For example several families in Cachagua lost their homes, including three volunteer firefighters. I will post links in the comments to other organizations or verified crowdfunding sites, as I find them. #carmelfire, #riverfire https://give.berkeley.edu/fund/?f=FU0837000

Via Cachagua Fire: Here are a few of our Cachagua Fire heroes. Two of the three Cachagua firefighters that lost their homes are in this photo. We thank our community for all of the love and support they have shown us. It's what keeps us going.

Update: Barring problematic weather in the next 24 hrs, we are in good shape. CalFire is still coming and going, but it seems like the bulk of the suppression activity is over. The active fire line is still very close, as the fire burns east towards our neighbors. Lots of CalFire presence on Martin Rd, but so far the fire is still in the hills.
