Didn't get a chance to drive by Folsom Lake College last night to see the Harris Center lit up red for #WeMakeEvents #RedAlertRESTART in support of the live events industry? Check out this gorgeous photo from David J. Grenier.

Today, Tues., Sept. 1, Folsom Lake College's Harris Center for the Arts, along with #WeMakeEvents, a coalition of live event and entertainment professionals, will light up their venues, homes, and cities red in over 1,500 locations across North America. The goals of #RedAlertRESTART are to raise public and media awareness and bolster support of the live events sector. It is estimated that 95% of live events, including those at the Harris Center, have been cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, directly impacting the more than 12 million people the industry employs. As a show of support, the Harris Center will be lit red from 9:00pm-12:00midnight tonight.

FROM ROSANNE CASH. 'I’ve been touring a lot more, but the rewardthe connection with the audiencehad outweighed the daily drill. They needed something from me, and giving it to them gave something back to me. I loved them. They knew it. I could bring songs to life in a way that connected them to their own feelings."

Another sad development in the arts. When did you last see CdS?

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? "Marquee officials describe the shows they offer as high-quality captures, produced using multiple cameras and led by directors experienced in bringing stage performances to the screen." Find art where you can...the Harris Center misses you!

Virtual Interactive Juneteenth Event with Sweet Honey - This Friday, June 19, 2020!! SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK invites you to a virtual concert and panel on Ju...neteenth, Friday, June 19, 8pm, in honor of this day in 1865 that news of emancipation reached the last group of enslaved Black people in Galveston, TX two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, making slavery illegal. Join us for an interactive experience of spirit and song, where, in spite of COVID-19 and continued systemic racial oppression, we will stand together, even while apart, as a global community! Through song, poem, and discussion, we will reflect on our nation’s turbulent racial past and present, while uplifting the dignity and wellbeing of all people. As Toni Morrison so eloquently expressed, You can participate in one of two ways. Honor the spirit of Juneteenth by purchasing a $19 ticket to sit in the front row of our interactive audience via Zoom video conference, where you will be seen by the performers and fellow attendees. As a video participant, you will be able to clap ASL style, sing along, share your love, and add your voice to our moderated post-performance discussion. There will also be a digital red carpet where you can have your photo taken. Ticket info at:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/juneteenth-a-day-of-remembranc Alternatively, you can simply watch the live event via Facebook, YouTube, or online at sweethoneyintherock.org/juneteenth. We thank you for your support, and look forward to raising our voices with you

Based upon guidance from federal, state, and local government officials and health experts, as well as the continued uncertainty on when indoor public events can safely resume, the Harris Center for the Arts will temporarily cease operations as of July 1, 2020. There is currently no timetable for the length of the temporary closure, but it is expected to last at least a year. More information and FAQ at: www.harriscenter.net.

The Mark Morris Dance Group is one of the most respected in the world; they have been in the capital region a couple of times. And now, like everybody else, they are online. The transition isn't always simple: "Even so, it was apparent that the architecture of the frames had a distinct musicality that culminated in a vivid moment: The dancers thrust their hands forward, growing closer and closer until the screen was peppered with close-ups of their eyes some calm, others filled with worry. It is the age of the mask: When we are in out in the world, our expression, even a hint of a smile, must somehow shine through our eyes" (NY Times).
