Our post today on attending lectures is about our amazing Allergy and Immunology specialist, Dr. Song! As residents, we can always count on Dr. Song to shed light on some of the immunodeficiency mysterious we see here at Harbor, as well as to always have learning pearls on hand to teach us!

A Day in the Life of John Paul Yap, MD Where are you from? ... Originally Houston, Texas . I’ve been a Cali guy for the past 11 years though. Where did you go to medical school? St. George’s University in Grenada Why did you choose Harbor-UCLA? On my interview day, I could literally feel the bond that the residents and faculty shared with one another and wanted to be a part of it. Getting to care for and advocate for our underserved patients is especially rewarding. Let’s not even talk about the great weather, great food, and amazing things to do in the area. % the place to be! Plans after residency? If I do fellowship, Neonatal ICU! Fun Fact? I have annual passes to both Disneyland and Universal Studios. I can’t wait until they open up again! #pedsmatch21 #pediatrician #residentspotlight

A Day in the Life of Paola Perez, MD, MPP Where are you from?... Los Angeles, Ca (but have lived all over SoCal) Where did you go to medical school? David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Why did you choose Harbor-UCLA? The program’s size really allows for residents to get to know each other well, which I believe contributes to Harbor’s collaborative and friendly environment. Also, not having many fellows allows for residents to work directly with our incredible specialist, whom are all very approachable and excited to teach. Plans after residency? outpatient general pediatrics Fun Fact? I love animals so much that I can’t stop rescuing them. At my peak I had 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 birds, 2 rabbits and a rat! #pedsmatch21 #pediatrician #pediatrics #womeninmedicine

The Certified Farmer’s Market Wednesdays are back at Harbor! It’s a great time to get outside during your lunch break as well as buy your fruits and veggies for the week. We love supporting local farmers and knowing that proceeds go to programs benefiting our patients! #pedsmatch21 #pediatricresidency #hpedsreslife #harborucla

Check out Dr. Sarah Gustafson giving the house staff a lecture on differentials for a limping child. Her lectures are always engaging, fun, and full of teaching pearls, which is why she is a two time recipient of the Faculty Teaching Award! The lecture ended with a quick game of Kahoot! #pediatricresidency #harborucla #hpedsreslife #pedsmatch21

A Day in the Life of Ami Mehta, DO, MA PGY-1... Where are you from? Diamond Bar, CA Where did you go to medical school? Midwestern University - AZCOM Why did you choose Harbor-UCLA? I fell in love with Harbor after doing a Sub-I here my 4th year of medical school. We get the privilege of working with a unique patient population that we get to learn from and advocate for daily. Everyone talks about the Harbor spirit and there really is something about the camaraderie and passion that everyone here seems to share that’s addicting to be around. And after being away from SoCal for a few years, I will never again take for granted being able to sit outdoors with my friends almost daily. You really can’t beat the great weather and the great company! Plans after residency? Still undecided Fun fact? I got a black belt in Tae kwon do when I was 6 years old. My older brother was enrolled and my mom wanted to join but didn’t have anyone to look after me so she just signed both of us up!

Introducing a new faculty member: Why Harbor? "I wanted to practice medicine in a setting where diversity is not just allowed or incidental, but desired and pursued, both in the patients and the staff. Harbor does that incredibly well, and the staff are dedicated to providing the highest quality of equitable care to their patients regardless of background, SES, etc. Plus, beach city living is " #flashbackfriday
