At Aurrera Health Group, we have a new name but the same mission-driven approach to our work. That mission to advance access to affordable, comprehensive, hi...gh-quality health care by definition includes supporting efforts to promote systemic changes that recognize and address racial injustice and inequity. Police violence and systemic racism are social determinants of health that disproportionately impact BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). Our organization supports Black Lives Matter and other efforts to address these issues. While we are proud of the work that we do with our clients that helps reduce health inequities, we have been thinking about ways we can serve in this particular moment. To begin, Aurrera Health Group will match up to $10,000 in donations to three organizations that are committed to policy improvement, supporting families, and empowering communities for racial justice.

In response to the #COVID19 pandemic, states are increasing access to coverage, growing workforce capacity, using telehealth, and focusing on vulnerable populations. Health Affairs describes how states are using federal authorities and changing state policies to proactively address healthcare challenges brought to light due to COVID-19.

Primary care providers play a critical role in increasing access to Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). They are often the sole medical providers for individuals struggling with opioid use disorder in rural and under-resourced areas. On behalf of the California Department of Health Care Services, we’ve created a new toolkit that connects primary care providers to the resources they need to treat their patients.

A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers is requesting at least $35.8 billion for mental health and substance use disorder treatment. A significant portion of the funding would be reserved for behavioral health organizations that serve Medicaid enrollees or other underserved populations.

Since 2017 California’s Whole Person Care Pilots have developed innovative ways to coordinate health, behavioral health, and social services for high-needs Medi-Cal beneficiaries. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the importance of this work into the spotlight as the counties with pilots are relying on and benefitting from their infrastructure and experience.
