Start your morning right with: Monday Morning Maintenance Tips - Oil Samples - Most pilots, or even some maintenance shops, don’t do an oil analysis when they change their oil. An oil analysis can help show you what’s going on inside your engine by monitoring wear trends. This is especially important for engines getting close to, or even over TBO. For an extra $15 to $20 per oil change, and oil analysis is cheap insurance for your aircraft and your state of mind.

Morning means breakfast so chew on this! Monday Morning Maintenance Tip - Bald Spots - No, we’re not talking about your hair! We’re talkin’ tires. Bald spots can cause a multitude of problems. On takeoff they can cause vibrations when the tire lifts off the ground. They can also decrease traction and braking efficiency. Left to go long enough they can start showing threads and eventually lead to a blow out! Bald spotting often happens on landing. If bald spots are plaguing you, here’s a tip: Make sure your heels are on the floor when landing. Also, don’t always try to make that first turn off if you don’t have to. Let the aircraft roll out and lightly brake to make the next turn off.

Breakfast for your brain! Monday Morning Maintenance Tip - Spark Plugs - 2 for each cylinder. 1 for each magneto per cylinder. Responsible for igniting that fuel/air mixture that creates the energy that helps keep us aloft. We’re talking spark plugs! These simple devices are removed at each 100 hour or Annual Inspection. Often mechanics will inspect the electrode, check the gap, clean out any signs of lead fouling, and return them to service. What can get overlooked is the resistance value of the plug. Over time spark plugs break down and the resistance value goes up. This can lead to hard starts (especially when cold), rough running, bad mag checks, and excess fuel burn. Make sure your mechanic checks your plugs properly on your next inspection, Hangar 25 does!

It's that time again! Monday Morning Maintenance Tip - Shimmy Dampers - Got the shakes? You can feel it in the rudder pedals when you’re taxing or on takeoff/landing rollout. There are a few reasons why this can happen: flat spotted nose wheel, improperly maintained nose strut, too much forward pressure on the yoke, but more than likely, it’s a failing shimmy damper. If you’ve got the shakes, Hangar 25 can help!
