Washing hands in cold water 'as good as hot’? US scientists say they have poured cold water on the theory that washing hands with hot water kills more germs tha...n unheated water. The small study of 20 people found using water at 60 deg. left hands as clean as water heated to 100 deg. Researchers say there was no difference in the amount of bacteria removed as the temperature of the water or the amount of soap changed. Also, antimicrobial soap was not significantly more effective than plain soap for removing bacteria. However, the researchers accept their study is small and say more extensive work is needed to determine the best ways to remove harmful bacteria. Experts recommend that hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds, and stress the importance of using enough soap to cover the whole surface of the hands and rubbing hands to assure that friction has been applied to ALL surfaces. Hand Rehabilitation Specialists remains open for both current and new patients. Extensive safety precautions are in place such as masks/gloves on all staff, provision of masks/gloves to patients, strict social distancing between patients and staff, reduced number of patients and staff in the clinic, hospital grade disinfection of surfaces and equipment after each patient, patient screening, strict hand-washing requirements, no guests, etc. We are also performing telehealth visits (video sessions) for those who prefer to do therapy from home. We hope everybody is healthy and safe!

Great information for those working remotely

Hand Rehabilitation Specialists 18.09.2020

We hope you and your family are safe and healthy. This has been a challenging time for all of us. We want you to know that all of us at Hand Rehabilitation Specialists are working hard to do our part to keep our clients and staff safe during the coronavirus pandemic. As most of you know, we have significantly, but temporarily, reduced our hours. While it is not immediately clear how soon we can resume business as usual, we are committed to meeting our patients' needs. In b...oth the Thousand Oaks and Simi offices we are seeing more urgent cases including new patients, those needing splints or adjustments, or anyone who feels that they need an in-person visit. Extensive precautions are in place, such as patient screening, no visitors, small caseload, hospital grade disinfection, use of gloves and masks, limited staff, etc. In addition, we have initiated TeleHealth video chat sessions. These have been working out very well and are easy to do from the safety of your home with either a computer, tablet or smartphone. We send an email or text link, you click on it, and voila!, you connect to your therapist. We hope that you will utilize this option; to make an appointment, please give the office a call at 805-495-0516, or email [email protected]. Payment for TeleHealth visits is expanding by the day. Many insurance carriers have added this benefit in the past week, including Medicare, United HealthCare, some Blue Shield, Facey, Regal, some Worker’s Comp, and others; we are hopeful that in the coming days we will have answers from all of your insurances. We are closely monitoring changing information from WHO, CDC, California and Ventura County Departments of Public Health, as well as the American Physical Therapy Association and American Occupational Therapy Association. We will update you regarding any potential changes via email, our website, and social media. Thank you for your understanding and your communication with us. We assure you that we are doing everything possible to protect our patients, our team, and our community. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey to better health. To our Valued Clients, We would like you to know that Hand Rehabilitation Specialists remains open for the time being, and that we are taking proactive measures to ensure the wellness of our clients and staff in light of the COVID-19 virus. Cleaning and disinfecting procedures are being executed in accordance with CDC/WHO guidelines for the COVID-19 virus. We are disinfecting shared hard-surface items such as evaluation instruments, pens, dumbbells, and table surface after ...each use. We have discontinued use of exercise/activity items that cannot be disinfected after use. Gloves and masks are available for clients who request them. All staff are wearing masks and as always, therapists wash hands between clients and are gloving for any direct contact. All staff are required to complete frequent hand washing. To create social distancing, we are separating patients with maximal distance possible, and requesting that only clients enter the clinic, including the waiting room, with the exception of parents of minors and those requiring physical assistance from a caretaker. What we ask of you: Please be sure that you can answer no to these 4 questions at each visit: Have you experienced any flu-like symptoms in the last 14 days (fever, cough, respiratory illness, or difficulty breathing)? Have you traveled outside the US in the last 14 days? Have you been in close contact with anyone who traveled outside the US within the last 14 days? Have you been in close proximity with anyone that has contracted the COVID-19 virus? We require that all clients wash their hands, wrists and forearms for 30 seconds at our sink before being seated in the clinic, and that you remain home if not feeling well. We are monitoring the situation closely, and will continue to take the necessary steps as recommended by our government and CDC. We are pleased to announce that we will be offering Telehealth e-visits over a HIPAA compliant video chat service. Please call the office for more information and if you have any other questions: Telephone 805/495-0516 or email us at [email protected]. All of us at Hand Rehabilitation Specialists sincerely hope that each of you is well, caring for both your body and your mind. Wash your hands frequently. Take a walk outside. Read a book. Listen to a meditation app. Laugh at a comedy movie. Use exercise and yoga apps to stay fit. Stay safe and healthy, Heidi and Laurie

While hand therapists can certainly help you overcome injuries to your upper extremities, there are things you can do to keep them from happening in the first place. When using computers for instance, it's best to take breaks and avoid long, uninterrupted stretches of work.
